2023年江苏省成人学士学位英语考试试卷 ENGLISH QUALIFICATION TEST FOR A BACHELOR’S DEGREE (Nov. 2023) Paper One Part Ⅰ Listening Comprehension(15minutes 15%)(共15题 略) Part II Reading Comprehension: Directions: There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write down the corresponding letter in the Answer Sheet. Recently I decided to hold some poetry readings for friends, partly for a selfish reason, liking to hear the sound of my own voice, but also because I suspected that there is a dimension of pleasure and understanding that we miss by reading poems only to ourselves. The most basic preliminary question of any reading is who reads. One answer would be to ask everyone to prepare one or two poems, and to go around the room. This gives everyone something to do, and it exposes everyone to a variety of tastes and interpretations. An alternative is to let one ham run the show. The ability to read aloud, like any other talent, is unevenly distributed; it’s probably better not to hear a poem at all than to hear it mangled. Reading aloud is also a mental and, to a degree, a physical effort.(86) If only one person does it, then, everyone else can enjoy the unalloyed pleasure of listening. If it’s not a pleasure, the reader will have no guests for his second reading. I thought it was only fair to my listeners to reward them for their attention with food and drink, but only fair to me to withhold it until I had finished. I limited the reading to one hour. 16.According to this passage, reading poetry aloud to other people A. Is a selfish thing B. Gives one no pleasure or understanding C.Gives one a kind of pleasure different from silent reading D. Is a suspicious act. 17.The author believes that when people read a poem aloud, they A.Show their own ways of understanding B.Betray their poor tastes in literature C.Take a walk around the room D.Are happy to have found something to do 18.What does the author think is the best form for a poetry reading session? A.Ask everyone to participate in the reading B.Ask one talented person to do the reading throughout. C.Invite everyone to walk around the room. D.Ask one person to read a few poems and then let others take their turns. 19.What is the author’s opinion of people’s ability to read aloud well? A.Such an ability is not a matter of talent. B.No one has the talent to do so. C.Not everyone has that ability. D.Everyone has the ability 20.According to this passage, which of the following statements is true? A.The author gave listeners food only after the reading had finished. B.The author was eating while other people were reading. C.The listeners were eating while the author was reading. D.The listeners gave the author drinks by way of thanks. Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. (87)All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed. Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements. Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies(一分为二). (88)This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts. 21.The passage is mainly discussing __________ . A. the necessity of social change B. certain factors that determine the ease with which social changes occur C. two different societies D. certain factors that promote social change 22.______ is one of the factors that tend to promote social change. A. Joint interest B. Different points of view C. Less emotional people D. Advanced technology 23.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. Social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society. B. Disagreement with and argument about conditions tend to slow down social change. C. Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society. D. Social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were young. 24.The expression "greater tolerance"(paragraph 1) refers to _____ . A. “greater willingness to accept social change” B. quicker adaptation to changing circumstances" C. "more respect for different beliefs and behavior" D. greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas" 25.Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways because ________ . A. people there have got so accustomed to their conditions that they seldom think it necessary to change B. people there have identical needs that can be satisfied without much Difficulty C. people there are easy to please D. people there are less disputed More on your Plate For years it has been possible to set up cameras to take pictures of cars as they speed along highways, jump lights or drive too fast down the street. However, even if the pictures are taken automatically, someone still has to do all the paperwork of sending out fines. But now a British company called EEV has come up with a computerized video system that can do it all automatically. They suggest that all number plates have a bar code(条形码) as well as the usual number. The bar codes are just stripes of lines like those you see on food packets but bigger. EEVs high speed video camera system can read a bar-coded number plate even if the car is doing over 100 miles per hour. The computer controlling the system could then use the information from the bar code to find out the name and address of the driver(from the car records),print out the fine and send it off automatically. The inventors also suggest that the system should watch traffic to help catch stolen cars. The new electronic system could be watching everyone that passes the cameras!(89)Many people find the idea that “big brother is watching you” is more of a worry than a few motorists getting away with driving too fast. Besides, some people will be very unhappy to realize that with the new system the police could find out where a particular car has been. 26. An alternative “summary” title for the article could be . A. People Who Drive Too Fast B. Stop People from Driving Too Fast C. EEV and the Police System D. Implications of Computerized System for Motoring Offenses 27. A traditional function of the camera as used by the traffic police system is to . A. take snapshots of cars on highways B. catch cars violating traffic rules C. send fines to fast motorists D. make the traffic system fully automatic 28.The newly-invented system functions more efficiently with the aid of________. A. car number B. vehicle speeding records C. bar coded numbers on number plates D. print-out fines 29.All of the following names can be used to describe EEV’s device except . A. a computerized video system B. “Big Brother” C. an electronic system D. an automatic fine printer 30.An additional function of the new system is that it could . A. add code numbers B. help catch stolen car C. watch everyone that drives too fast D. print out bar codes automatically (90)Since the beginning of history, man has been attracted by the idea of living forever, of wining the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies. It has long been known that meat of fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing; in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans, and in fact many people have explored this possibility. However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals(晶体), which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also form sharp cutting shapes that harms the cells. In the 1940s Dr B.J.Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them.Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them. Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin(丙三醇), a clear, thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen.Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperatures. Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured. 31.The passage is mainly about ___________. A.the possibility of preserving human bodies by freezing B.the practice of preserving food by freezing C.the harmful effects of freezing D.how to remove water from living cells 32.The idea of freezing human bodies to preserve them ___________. A.comes from that of keeping meat and fruit fresh by freezing B.was invented in ancient China C.has already been realized D.is widely accepted by the scientific world 33.According to the passage, freezing is___________.
