To be or not to be --Of life To be or not to be, that’s the question; to succeed or to give up, that’s the point. What’s the meaning of life? It’s various according to individual’s willing. Most of us want to be successful in a certain degree and take this as the meaning of life. There are lots if obstacles in the way towards to success. So, let’s back to the original stage. We’re the normal. If we can’t be successful, then we’ll be the loser considered the worst situation. Some may can’t bear this kind of feeling and want to give up. Then, here one more question arising. How should we define success? Is it anyone who makes a great sum of money or win an honorable fame? Success is a kind of experience praised by public; failure is a kind of experience undesirable to public. That’s the major distinct between success and failure. From my point of view, no matter what kind of results we may get, we all can be called being successful because we all get the valuable experience. Do not feel ashamed of being a loser. Keep in mind that once being a loser and later forever being a winner. Believe in yourself. That’s the key point I want to emphasize. The meaning of life is simple to explain since success is an attitude. Life itself is meaningless. We human beings add our subjective consciousnesses to life and want it to become meaningful. Just make sure what are we chasing for. Those who commit suicide surely can’t get what they want or even don’t know what they want. Whether we can be free if we are dead? I wish it would be, but we don’t know about that. Since dying isn’t so fearful to us, is there anything more dangerous than that? Then turn our eyes once again in this world and we’ll find it seems more colorful than we think it used to be. So, here we can draw a conclusion: life itself is not fearful but the philosophy; difficulties are not hard but the unknown world. Try our best to run for the things we are desired of and protect it till the end of our life . Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but also for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be, to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying: "I think, therefore am." But the best definition of existence ever saw did another philosopher who said: "To be is to be in relations." If this true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity of our relations. Unfortunately we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But apart from our regular occupation how much are we alive? If you are interested only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned--poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs--you are dead. Contrariwise, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest--even more, a new accomplishment--you increase your power of life. No one who is deeply interested in a large variety of subjects can remain unhappy; the real pessimist is the person who has lost interest. Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loses a friend. But we gain new life by contacts, new friends. What is supremely true of living objects is only less true of ideas, which are also alive. Where your thoughts are, there will your live be also. If your thoughts are confined only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to the narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow cir-conscribed life. But if you are interested in what is going on in China, then you are living in China~ if you’re interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interesting people, if you listen intently to fine music, you are away from your immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination. To be or not to be--to live intensely and richly, merely to exist, that depends on ourselves. Let widen and intensify our relations. While we live, let live! To be, or not to be-that is the question. This is one of the most famous quotations in world literature and the best-known of the play Hamlet. The soliloquy, spoken in the play by Prince Hamlet, best shows the bitterness and conflict in Hamlet’s heart. First off, Shakespeare presented the two options: “to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” represents the option—to be, and “to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them” represent the option—not to be. Here, taking arms against a sea of troubles is suicide. If death can prevent us from all the troubles, then it is the consummation to be wished. But we don’t know what awaits us after death. This makes people coward. The fear of unknown makes people coward. people would rather suffer “the whips and scorns of time, the oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely, the pangs of despis'd love, the law's delay, the insolence of office, and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes”. Shakespeare expressed in Hamlet’s voice his depiction of the disappointing and miserable world. At the end, Shakespeare noted that “conscience does make cowards of us all” and make us “lose the name of action”, which is also the mirror of Hamlet’s mind, showing his irresolution and scrupulosity. To my understanding, the essential purport of this soliloquy is that the state is incurable and it should better to be rebuilt. More importantly, action should not be held up by endless conscience. Original: Life is long and difficult, and making choices is unavoidable, then we often ask ourselves one question: to be, or not to be. Some people choose to evade the question by indulging themselves in sex, booze and gambling or choosing to die. But all these are useless. The question remains there unsolved. Some people are trapped by this question. They keep asking themselves day and night, weigh the two sides repeatedly, but dare not to make the final choice, because no matter what they choose, the consequence will be severe. In this matter, I quite agree with Lu Xun who once said: a true brave fighter dares to face the dismal life and dare to face up to the blood dripping. Giving too much consideration and having too many worries could kill our spirits, making us to be a coward. And if we take the first step forward, we may find it is not as difficult as we thought. We do make wrong choice and fail at times, but failure sometimes tells us more. The way ahead is long without ending, yet I am not afraid. The thing is not what to choose, but be brave to choose.
