What should I do? Anna Dani says: Often people make things up because they’re worried that they are not interesting. So let your friend know that she doesn’t need stories to make friends or impress (给……留下深刻印象) others. Point out that when others discover the truth, they won’t be impressed at all. Dear Dani, I have two best friends and they’re always leaving me out! They never invite me to anything. What can I do? Tom Dani says: Groups of three can be very difficult because one person often gets left out. Your friends may not realize how you feel. Talk to them about this and agree to plan the next outing together. With a bit of effort, a group of three can be a wonderful friendship! Dear Dani, I told my friend a secret, but then I found out she told it to somebody else. What can I do? Daisy Dani says: We all make mistakes so give your friend another chance. But tell her that your secret is important to you and that she must not do this again. If your friend finds it hard to keep a secret, be careful what you tell her in future. Dear Dani, I’m friends with a boy, but some girls keep laughing at me about it. Can’t girls be friends with boys as well? Mary Dani says: Of course girls can be friends with boys. Some girls laugh at this because they don’t really know any boys. Carry on enjoying your friendship. If the girls got to know this boy, they might stop teasing you. Why not invite one or two of them along next time you meet him? 21.What’s worrying Anna? A. Her friend keeps telling lies. B. Her friend is not interesting. C. Her friend does not believe her. D. Her friend reads her terrible stories. 22. Dani suggests that Tom _____. A. leave his two friends B. tell his friends his thoughts C. go on an outing with one of his friends D. invite another to join his group of friends 23. Whose friend has a big mouth? A. Tom. B. Mary. C. Anna. D. Daisy. 24. The underlined word “teasing” in the last paragraph probably means “_____”. A. avoiding B. hating C. making fun of D. taking pity on B On my first day of high school, I asked an eleventh-grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later that we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either! Besides that, I didn’t have any trouble with the older kid. I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before, gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful! While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions. 25. What happened to the author on his first day of high school? A. He had a fight with an eleventh-grader. B. He fell into a pool on the fourth floor. C. He was five minutes late for class. D. He was fooled by a schoolboy. 26. The author advises high school students to _____. A. give up sports B. choose useful classes C. try their best to get good grades D. get ready for tests the night before 27. The last paragraph mainly tells us _____. A. about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking B. about the importance of making friends C. not to go to any party in high school D. not to lose ourselves in high school C On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn’t believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy. I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road. Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word. I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head. After this happened, I thought about how thankful I am. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I didn’t really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help. 28. When the author saw the little girl, _____. A. the girl had lost her way B. she was driving to work in a hurry C. the girl feared to go across the road D. there weren’t many cars on the road 29. The little girl ran away from the author because _____. A. she wanted to stay on the road B. she didn’t know the author at all C. she wanted to look for her father D. she needed to catch her stroller 30. Why were the author’s hands shaking? A. Because she was not feeling well. B. Because she was too excited to keep calm. C. Because the weather was very cold at that time. D. Because she failed to be understood by the girl’s father. 31. The author thought that her help was _____. A. really necessary B. worth praising C. not welcome D. not useful 32. What can we learn from the passage? A. The girl’s father didn’t like the girl at all. B. The girl’s father had wanted to thank the author. C. The author shared her experience with her son. D. The author felt sad that no one else helped the girl. D One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time! ______ — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old! 33. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should _____. A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well 34. When we provide help for our friends, we should _____. A. try to do everything for them B. put them before ourselves C. change their bad habits first D. ignore their faults 35. Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph? A. Make plans. B. Enjoy yourself. C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends. Douglas was my cousin.
