A Mars was the first planet that humans attempted to get to. Since the 1960s, scientists have been working to learn more information about Mars’ past, We now know that Mars was once a warm and wet place with great oceans and deep rivers. We also know that about 3.7 billion years ago, all the water disappeared when the planet lost its air. But why did the atmosphere on Mars change so greatly? NASA(美国航天局) has launched the MAVEN spacecraft in the hope of answering that very question. MAVEN will study the remains of Mars’ air and help scientists figure out what became of the rest of it. The spacecraft was launched on Monday, November 18, 2013, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The trip to Mars will take about 10 months. and MAVEN is planned to go into orbit(轨道) in September 2014. It is the first spacecraft created with the purpose of studying Mars’ atmosphere. Its wings measure 37.5 feet, not quite the length of a school bus, and it weighs 1,991 pounds, about the same amount as a small car. MAVEN is equipped with eight different tools to measure and study the planet’s atmosphere. To collect information, it will fly into orbit as fast as 3,278 miles per hour, and as slow as 93 miles per hour, Once it arrive at Mars, MAVEN will have plenty of company(陪伴). The spacecraft Curiosity is still walking around the planet’s rocky surface, studying the geology, chemistry and possible biology there. NASA currently has a number of spacecraft getting unique views of Mars with powerful cameras. These missions(使命)are all taking slow and steady steps forward to discover Mars’ secret past. While the results may not be revealed(揭露) for some time, an exciting exploration is on the way. 21.We can learn from the first paragraph that_______. The simple answer is that is a global trading platform where nearly anyone can trade practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, clothes and shoes—the list goes on and on. The idea came from Peter Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating from Tuft University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time, he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth(口口相传). By 1996 there was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade (升级) and he began charging a fee to members. Joined by a friend, Peter Skoll, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whiteman, he has never looked back. Even in the great crashes(破产) of the late 1990s, eBay has gone from strength to strength. It is now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet. eBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have to do is take an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business; the world is your market place. Of course for each item(商品) sold eBay gets a percentage(手续费) and that is a great deal of money. Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are sold. 25. We know from the text that eBay provides people with ____. How does eBay make money from its website? A. By bringing sellers together. B. By listing items online. C. By charging for each sale. D. By making e-photos. C This year, the Sepak Takraw(藤球) team in the Northern Territory, Australia is very different. It is partly made up of Karens, people from eastern and southern Myanmar(缅甸) in Southeast Asia. They’ve only recently started calling the Australian city Darwin home. Other team members were chosen from players at Charles Darwin University. “We'vegot some native players as well as some players that have come from the Karen,” said team coach Steven Svensson, “Having both modern and traditional skills has given our team a big advantage because they will be able to perform well in different team plays and different game plays.” While the sport is new to Australians, it has a long history throughout Southeast Asia. Svensson said, “ For most Australians it looks a bit like a game of kick volleyball. It’s played on a badminton(羽毛球) court, with a badminton net. It’s quite an ancient sport that comes from Southeast Asia.” There are records that pre-date(早与) the 13th century. “A lot of people in lots of villages still see it as a traditional sport. And the sport itself is still used as a way of building a better citizens in a smaller community(社区),” he said. “It’s for this reason that the players who’ve come from Southeast Asia have such traditional skills. They are now passing on the skills to the Australian members of the team.” As well as providing a cultural bridge between refugees(难民) and students in Darwin, the sport has also given people with no English skills a chance to feel at home in Australia, playing a game they love. “ The sport itself is seen as something to be shared in their own mother country, and the sport itself is aicebreaker. The Australian players have made good friends through the sport, and I’m sure the Karen players have also found a way to feel more comfortable in a different country.” The team will compete in the Arafura Games for the Northern Territory. Competition starts on Sunday the 10th of May. 29.In what way is the Northern Territory Sepak Takraw team different ? A. It is the beat team in the Northern Territory. B. A. gives people a lot of fun B. can make people less nervous C. helps people pass their spare time D. may improve a player’s performance 32. What can be the best title for the text? A. Karen people calling Darwin home B. Sports coming from Southeast Asia C. Sepak Takraw bridging cultural differences D. Arafura Games going to start on May 10 D Ever since Amelia Earhart vanished while flying over the South Pacific in 1937, scientists and historians have searched for the remains(残骸) of her plane. On July 3, a group of researchers set out to look for the plane using the latest technology. On Monday, the team announced that they collected a great deal of evidence but did not find the plane. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) did the $2.2 million research. The group still believes that the plane crashed into a reef(暗礁) somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and is already planning a voyage next year. Patricia Thrasher, the president of TIGHA, explained that a complicated(复杂的) search like this one could take a long time. “It’s not like an Indiana Jones flick where you go through a door and there it is,” she said. Amelia Earhart was a pioneer for women pilots. She bought her first plane in 1992. In May, 1932, she became the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. The trip took 14 hours and 56 minutes—a new record. In 1937, Earhart set out to fly around the world with her navigator(航海员), Fredrik Noonan, in her plane. The pilot and navigator never returned. The US Navy searched for the pair, but they were never found. The TIGHAR search began after the group spotted a clue in an old photograph. There appeared to be a piece of landing equipment in a reef near the remote island of Nikomoro. The explorers wondered if the equipment in the photo might be from Earhart’s missing plane. The researchers planned to stay 10 days, but could only stay five because of equipment problems. The uneven(不平坦的) land created shadows that made it difficult to see, but the researchers were able to collect evidence, and they took hours of video. When they reach Hawaii, they will examine the evidence. TIGHAR will continue to search for Earhart’s plane. Even though the plane was not found, Tharsher considers the search a success. He believes the evidence collected by his team could contain valuable clues. 33.What does the underlined word “vanished” in Para.1 probably mean? A. Failed B. Sank C. Hid D. Disappeared 34. Patricia Thrasher mentioned Indiana Jones to show that their voyage was____. A. interesting B. exciting C. difficult D. relaxing 35. Which of the following is TRUE about Amelia Earhart? A. She started flying her own plane before 1922. B. She never traveled around the world with someone else. C. She flew across the Atlantic Ocean by herself in1932. D. She was the first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. 第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) How strong are you? That is a difficult question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman. But, really, I want to ask …how do you define(定义) your strength? How do you know your limits? When pushed, we often discover that we are much stronger than we think. 36 Strength is not always just about physical strength. Rather, it’s about willpower(意志力), discipline(纪律) and drive. 37 I know some people who are intelligent, but they get little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work very difficult, but are able to move mountains by their hard work. They have inner(内在的)strength. Limiting yourself What I have observed is that most people limit themselves. They limit their output according to how limited they imagine their abilities and strengths to be. Sometimes these limits are based on past experiences. Sometimes they are based on what they think their abilities are. 38 Pushing it … Many people are working out, but nowhere near as much as they could. 39 Pushing yourself is what it takes to go beyond your limits. In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago. But this is also true when it comes to inner strength. Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Test your limits to see if they are simply what you imagine them to be. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved. Your are stronger than you think Most people underestimate(低估) their strength. As you go through your day, test your limits. Push yourself to find your true limits and define your strength- 配套讲稿:
