It’s finished. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to go.” “But, sir, if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.” “What’s that!” said the boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.” “I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star sportsman and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军)there.” The boss sat perfectly still for a long time — a faraway (恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours -- maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.” Watson got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School -- written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read: I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple (跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. A. share a moving story with us B. make our children enjoy life C. provide us with tips on work D. help us to deal with our boss B James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name. “J. C.,” he replied. She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name. Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later. A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down the stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book. The stage was set for Owens’ victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic(运动的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African American winners. “It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn’t go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.” Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored(给予荣誉) by the United States until 1976, four years before his death. Owens’ Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs. “Sure, it bothered me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.” In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.” 25. For their size, ants — and several other insects — are incredibly strong. For example, the humble dung beetle(甲虫), whose scientific name is Onthophagus Taurus, was recently named the world’s strongest insect by a group of scientists. How strong is it? You might be amazed. The strongest dung beetle can pull weight up to 1,141 times its own body weight. That’s like a human being lifting over 180,000 pounds! Think you can lift 90 tons? Ants are not nearly as strong as dung beetles, but they can also do some impressive work. If you’ve ever seen an ant colony at work, you know that ants can carry leaves, rocks and other materials much bigger than themselves. Ants have been known to carry objects up to 50 times their own body weight. So why are ants and other insects so strong? It’s actually because of their small size. When you lift something, your muscles must also lift parts of your own body, like your arms and your legs. The bigger you are, the more these body parts weigh. The more these body parts weigh, the less overall weight you’re able to lift. Tiny ants and other insects have to lift very little of their own body weight, because they’re so small. As a result, they’re able to lift objects much bigger than themselves. In other words, most of their strength goes to lifting an object, rather than their own body parts. This can be seen in the work of leafcutter ants. These ants will attack leaves, flowers and grass, cutting down and carrying off large pieces many times their body size. Although these ants are tiny, their powerful jaws can cut, lift and carry pieces of vegetation weighing 50 times their own body weight. That’s like you lifting a truck with your teeth! 32. An example is given in the second paragraph in order to tell us that ______. A. the beetle can put 180, 000 pounds up B. a human being is heavier than the beetle C. the beetle is stronger than a human being D. a human being can lift 90 pounds 33. The insect can carry something much heavier than its body probably because ______. A. it has strong arms B. its body is very light C. its feet are very large D. it is good at lifting anything 34. By saying “That’s like you lifting a truck with your teeth!” in the last paragraph, the writer means that "______!”. A. An ant can lift a truck like you B. You are as strong as an ant C. Your teeth can lift a heavy truck D. The ants’ strength is surprising 35. The writer develops this passage by ______.
