We interviewed several students from the US and Canada. Here is what they have told us about their Thanksgiving experiences. Josie from New York, USA “In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated every year at the end of November. It is to remember the first group of people from Europe to live in America. When they first arrived, they found the environment strange. But they learned to survive after some native American friends showed them how to grow and find food. Thanksgiving is meant to be a traditional celebration.” Todd from California, USA “Thanksgiving is the first day of Christmas shopping. That means we have four weeks to buy Christmas presents for our families and friends. For me and my friends, the most important part of the festival is the big football game on TV. The match is watched by millions of people all over America. Thanksgiving is seen as an exciting day for football!” Ian from Saskatoon, Canada “In Canada, Thanksgiving is held on the 2nd Monday in October. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, many people go to church. Thanks is given for all the good things that happened to them during the year. I always give thanks for the nice big turkey I’m going to have at the family dinner! Like all festivals, Thanksgiving is about food!” Katie from Maritimes, Canada “On Thanksgiving Day, we have dinner with all our cousins, aunts and uncles. It is always very busy. Sometimes we have two Thanksgiving dinners because we go to both our grandparents’ houses. The dinner is usually attended by more than twenty people at each house! My mother and my aunts do all the cooking but the washing-up is done by me and my cousins. And that’s not an easy job! Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat! Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food. But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable. Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. 25. Eating insects _____. A. is not healthy B. makes people put on fat C. helps protect large animals D. is environmentally friendly 26. The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show _____. A. the high cost of food production B. it’s quite easy for farmers to raise insects C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects 27. The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from _____. A. their terrible taste B. people’s old beliefs C. family traditions D. eating methods 28. We can infer from David and other insect experts that _____. A. people can make a lot of money from insects B. insects should be better protected C. people should eat more insects D. it’s dangerous to eat insects C Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him. Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music. Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel. Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.” However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word. Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies. 29. What is special about Samuel Osmond? A. He has a gift for writing music. B. He can write down the note he hears. C. He is a top student at the law school. D. He can play the musical piece he hears. 30. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. Samuel chose law against the wish of his parents. B. Samuel planned to be a lawyer rather than a musician. C. Samuel thinks of himself as a man of great musical ability. D. Samuel studies law and music on the advice of his teachers. 31. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. The Qualities of a Musician B. The Story of a Musical Talent C. The Importance of Early Education D. The Relationship between Memory and Music. D Los Angeles is well-known for traffic jams and aggressive drivers.Devon Fitzgerald,a cyclist,is familiar with both. “A lot of L.A. folks are in a rush,’’he said,“and it is very easy for them to prioritize(优先于)their speed over your safety.” The city is known for its car culture because Los Angeles is spread out and public transportation is either slow or limited. As a result, people drive everywhere, causing congestion(拥挤)almost any time of day. Therefore,Fitzgerald likes to ride his bicycle to work.“I like the fact that it simplifies a lot of the aspects of travel,”Fitzgerald said.“For instance,I don’t have to worry about parking.” However,Roger Rosas, who drives, says that bicycles are dangerous for the cyclist and the driver.“You always have to make sure that you look to the other side because you are going to dodge this guy. You don’t want to do a hit-and-run,” he said. To make cycling safer, some bicyclists in Los Angeles, who live and work near each other, are cycling to work together in what’s called a “Bike Trains". “You are a big enough group that cars don’t have the same behaviors as if you are just one person,” said Nona Varnado, who co-founded L.A. Bike Trains. “And you are also with an experienced cyclist.” L.A. Bike Trains was launched in May 2013 and the number of participants and routes around the city has been growing. The routes range from 7 to almost 32 kilometers long. That makes L.A. Bike Trains unique compared to other cities, says Herbie Huff, a transportation expert at University of California Los Angeles. “We want people to develop that mental sense of security and confidence by riding together in a group,” Nona Varnado said. Her aim is to make it so that bike trains are an important part of Los Angeles culture. 32. What do we know about the transportation in Los Angeles from the passage? A .People lack awareness of traffic safety. B. Drivers are quite rude to their passengers. C. A lot of traffic accidents happen every day. D. The roads are often crowded with cars. 33.We can know from the passage that Devon Fitzgerald________ A. sometimes drives fast in order not to be late for work B. prefers to ride a bike in order to save money C. thinks it less worrying to go to work by bike D. is satisfied with the transportation of Los Angeles 34.
