It doesn't have many exciting activities. D. It has nothing in common with De Efteling. B Hello. I'm Jan from Mrs. Lake's class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter(垃圾) along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt(收养) a highway. Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean. The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up. We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake's room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we'll try to pick an area to adopt and clean. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean! 24. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program about? A. Giving names to the highways. B. Drawing pictures of highways. C. Picking up litter along the roads. D. Putting up signs near the roads. 25. What should the students do first if they want to join the program? A. Pick a spot to care for. B. Go to a meeting on Wednesday. C. Write a letter to their parents. D. Call Mrs. Lake next week. 26. What is the purpose of this speech? A. To encourage students to join the program. B. To introduce the traffic system. C. To show drivers how to drive safely. D. To tell a story about adopting a highway. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Adopt-a-Pet B. Volunteers on Roads C. Ways to Protect the Environment D. Adopt-a-Highway C Understanding one's own history is important for young people's learning and development. Students are often asked to write a story about their own family's history or about a special person in their family. But too rarely do students focus on the history of their own community or their own people, in a way that helps them to understand why they find themselves in a particular place. When people understand their own history, they are able to grapple with the influence of the social structures that sometimes limit the possibilities in their lives. Taking this approach opens the door for young people to be managers of their own learning and development as they understand why they find themselves where they are. Many people I have been talking to about this issue agree that not only schools but also public bodies and families have failed to educate young people about their own history. And I know from my own experience how difficult it was for my father to talk about his family's experience in 1944. This may be a reflection of the sadness that people feel about that history and not wanting to make it a burden on their young people. But in today's situation, those I spoke with now clearly see that as a mistake. If our society is ever going to find a way to properly deal with the influence of our own history, including what has happened to our Native American, African-American and Latino friends, our neighbors' schools must step up to help young people understand their own stories. Families and related social bodies must do the same. 28. According to Paragraph 1, a good knowledge of our own history can help us____ A. become good at writing stories B. make our influence on the society stronger C. gain a good understanding of our present situation D. understand the importance of learning and development 29. What does the underlined phrase “grapple with” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. determine B. recover C. exercise D. manage 30.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that the author's family's experience in 1944 was_____ A. harmful B. painful C. interesting D. surprising 31.The passage mainly encourages us to _______. A. write our own stories B. understand the importance of history C. learn our own history D. have a proper attitude towards history D It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack. “Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame (名声) or salary. I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future. 32.Which of the following topics do the writer and his mother often talk about? A. The writer’s studies. B. The writer’s future job C. Dinner plans D. Wars around the world 33. We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the writer’s mother ______. A. doesn’t want the writer to major in English B. doesn’t think the writer should be a doctor C. gets along very well with the writer D. doesn’t think working in the science field is a good idea 34. The underlined word “bemoans” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _____. A. agrees B. shouts C. complains D. smiles 35. Which of following statements is probable TRUE about the writer? A. He wants to be like his mother’s co-worker’s son. B. He wants to find a job in his community in the future. C. He doesn’t think his mother’s co-worker’s son is perfect. D. He wants to do something he really likes in the future. 第二节(共5小题;毎小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many parents sometimes feel they resemble(类似) an ATM machine to their children.
