The headman was Auguste Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Soon they heard the sea below them. They were carrying the usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. This could hold water, or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. It was for use over the sea. They were also carrying some bags of sand. After the sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 metres, and the airwas very cold. The water in the balloon became ice. Snow fell past the men’s basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. There was also some snow on the balloon, and that made it very heavy. It began to go down towards the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard. They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling; so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake below and made a black hole in the ice. At last they pulled the box into the basket. It was still snowing; so they climbed toget away from the snow. They rose to 5,100 metres! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland heavily but safely. They had traveled 1,797 kilometres from London! 71. Three men flew in a balloon _______. The three men had to land because they felt cold. B Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works(作品) of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are righthanded, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed. Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain(大脑). The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls (控制) the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is center for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that lefthandedness is twice as common among artists than among people in other jobs. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of lefthanded. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged(损害) when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for righthandedness, he/she may become either right or left handed according to the chance(偶然性)and the people they work or live with. Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, lefthanded children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to. 76.After studying works of are made at different times in history, the scientists found ________. A. the art began from 1,500 B.C. A. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed. B. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness. C. Today children are not made to use their right hands only. D. Different Brains, Different Hands C We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers wewere going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow. “Buy it.” My wife said at once, “ We’ll carry it home on the roof rack (车顶上的架子). I’ve always wanted one like that.”What could I do? Ten minutes later I was 20 pounds poorer; and the cupboard was tied onto the roof racks. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square; quite heavy too. In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind, why don’t they overtake, I wonder?” In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to us “Right, sir,” he said, “Do you need any more help?” I was a bit puzzled, “thanks, officer.” I said. “You have been very kind. I live just down the road.” He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well,” he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there. We thought it was something else.” My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer, “Yes, it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could. 81. In fact the husband _______ the cupboard.
