To make up what she had done, she went to an old wise man in the village and asked for advice. The old man understood the young woman's suffering. He knew he must help her. He knew he could never remove her pain, but he could teach. And he also knew the result would depend only on her character. “Tonight take your best feather pillows and put single feather on the doorstep of each house in the village before the sun rises”,he said. The young woman hurried home to prepare for it, even though the feather pillows were very dear to her. All night long, she made her efforts alone in the cold. Finally it got light and she placed the last feather on the step of the last house. Just as the sun rose, she returned to the old man. “Now,”said the man, “go back and refill your pillows with the feathers you have put on the steps. Then everything will be as it was before.” “You know that's impossible! The wind blew away each feather as fast as I placed them on the doorsteps!” The young woman was surprised. “That's true.” said the old man, “Each of your words is like a feather in the wind. Those are a few of the countless new products expected to be shown next week at CES, the annual tech conference that typically sets the tone for the biggest trends of the year. Home automation(自动化), health and 5G will once again be hot topics, but many companies will also introduce pandemic-specific features to reflect our increased time at home. Each year, reporters, exhibitors and investors typically explore Las Vegas showrooms filled with giant TVs, smart cars and robots, but CES will be online only for the first time in its 54-year history due to Covid-19. The Consumer Technology Association, the nonprofit behind the four-day event starting Monday, said 1,800 exhibitors from around the world will fill its "digital venue" this year—a number that's down significantly from 4,000 in-person exhibitors last year. The move will allow tech companies from countries which have never attended before to take part in the online exhibition, but could also make it harder for smaller companies to get noticed without a physical showroom. Registered attendees will be able to stream and re-watch keynotes from companies such as Verizon (VZ) and General Motors (GM), tune in to breakout sessions -- about how, for example, technology is playing a role in vaccine deployment(疫苗的应用)—and search through a registry of exhibitors to watch new product presentations. It'll lack some of the signature ingredients(因素)of the trade show, such as hands-on time with the latest small machines and networking. But the technology that makes our lives more connected and convenient will still gain popularity. 33. What are the new products mainly connected with? A. The popularity of 5G. B. Countless housework C. People’s daily life. D. Everyday busy work. 34. What do we know about the tech conference? A. It attracts fewer exhibitors this year. B. It takes place every two years. C. It is usually held on the Internet. D. It prohibits small companies to attend. 35. What’s the author’s attitude towards the move? A. Disappointed. B. Doubtful. C. Ambiguous. D. Supportive. 36. Where are the text possibly from? A. A brochure. B. A textbook. C. A guidebook. D. A newspaper. D Multiple measures have been taken to cut down on food waste, but one young man is making a big difference with technology. Liu Jichen, 23, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a WeChat mini-program called “Clear Your Plate”. After a meal, users can open the mini-program and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the image is recognized by the AI, students can collect points and use them to buy gifts or purchase charity meals for children in poor rural areas. Liu and his team, together with other organizations, launched the “Clear Your Plate” campaign in November for the third year. It has swept over 1,017 universities across the country. Furthermore, the one-month campaign attracted almost 1.6 million participants and collectively reduced food waste by 862 tons and carbon emissions by 3,337 tons, China Youth Daily reported. “Technological innovation is a good way to reduce food waste,” Liu thought. He organized a team to work on the project at the end of 2017. To solve the AI’s problem of identifying photos of empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples in canteens and restaurants. In 2018, the mini-program was officially put into operation on Oct 16, World Food Day. They then launched a campaign later that year. “There were so many unknowns in research and development. For our team members, the biggest challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it,” Liu said. They not only achieved their goal, but now, the mini-program has more than 5 million registered users. “We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation by encouraging them to cherish their food and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global food security challenges,” he added. 37. What can we know about the “Clear Your Plate” mini-program? A. It is an exchange of food for rewards. B. It helped reduce food waste by 3,337 tons. C. Its 5 million registered users are all students. D. It aims to reduce food waste and encourage people to cherish food. 38. What is the biggest challenge Liu Jichen and his team faced? A. They felt uncertain whether they could complete the project. B. They found it difficult to promote the campaign. C. They had difficulty gathering enough samples. D. They lacked professional technical support. 39.
