Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in a merciless way. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion. Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression—to get cold feet—that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation. Cold can also affect your shoulder. You “give someone the cold shoulder” when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others. “A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and show no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. “Out in the cold” is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be. 21.The passage is intended to tell us that________ A.cold weather has a great effect on human bodies B.many English expressions contain the word “cold” C.cold is a word closely linked with human emotions D.the word “cold” has many different meanings in English 22.The underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1 most probably means“________”. A.impolite B.illegal C.cruel D.extreme 23.You can say Tom ____ if the teacher gives all the boys except him a pen as a prize. A.is given the cold shoulder B.is left out in the cold C.has got cold feet D.is murdered by a cold-blooded killer 24.We can draw a conclusion from the passage that ________. A. all the expressions of the “cold” in this passage have negative meanings B. all the expressions containing the word “cold” have something to do with cold C. people who show no human emotions or feelings have cold blood D. many parts of the human body can be badly affected by cold (B) The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to get her to school. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slow language development. As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession(大萧条). My job and my house had been victims. Then this happened. My child’s language delay was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be rescued. I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me. “You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber.” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today she did it!” He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her defeating Mount Qomolangma! “She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had beat her mountain. As she ran toward me, I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a hero. Everyday greatness celebrates ordinary people who do unusual things in big and small ways, showing courage, kindness, love and selflessness. We encourage you to click these brief accounts and invite you to share your own story. 25. Why did the author rush her daughter to school? A. She was busy with her work as a doctor. B. She got the first place in the school sports meet. D. She began to communicate with others normally. 28.From which is the text most probably taken? A. The radio. B.A magazine. C.A newspaper. D. The Internet. (C) For the first time, a generation of children is going through adolescence with smartphones ever-present. Jean Twenge , a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, has a name for these young people born between 1995 and 2012:"iGen". She says, “Members of this generation are physically safer than those who came before them. They drink less they learn to drive later. " "But psychologically," she argues, "they far more easily get hurt. It's not an overstatement to describe iGen as being on the edge of the worst mental health crisis in decades.'' Today's teens are just not spending as much time with their friends face-to-face where they can really read each others' emotions and get that social support. And we know from lots of research that spending time with other people in person is one of the best predictors for psychological well-being and one of the best protections against having mental health issues. They're more likely than young people just 5 or 10 years ago to say that they're anxious, and that they have symptoms of depression. How much of a factor is parenting? “Parenting is playing a role. Many parents are worried about their teens driving, and going out with their friends and drinking. Yet parents are often not worrying about their teens who stay at home on their phones all the time. But they should be worried about that. I think parents are worried about the wrong thing," Professor Twenge remarked. She proposes several helpful solutions, "The first is just awareness that spending a lot of time on the phone is not harmless and that if you're spending a lot of time on the phone, then it may take away time from activities that might be more beneficial for psychological well being, like spending time with people in person. And then for parents, I think it is a good idea to delay giving your child a smartphone as long as you can.” 29. What does iGen refer to according to the text? A. Generation with high intelligence. B. Generation in information age. C. Physically strong generation. D. Psychologically healthy generation. 30. How can today's teens avoid mental health crisis? A. By making more friends online. B. By seeing psychologists frequently. C. By reading others' emotions constantly. D. By communicating with friends face to face. 31. What should parents concern according to Professor Twenge? A. Their teens' chatting with classmates. B. Their teens' poor school performance. C. Their teens' addiction to smart phones. D. Their teens' staying out with their friends. (D) Why have so many awards ceremonies appeared recently? Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens. It would be possible to say, however, that in the past, scientists and artists could win “support” from rich people—a king or a lord would give the artist or scientist money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways of making money. With the change in social systems across the world, this no longer happens. A lot of scientific research is now either funded by the state or by private companies. Perhaps awards ceremonies are just the most recent face of this process. However, there is more to it than that. When a film wins an Oscar, many more people will go and see it or buy the DVD. When a writer wins the Nobel prize, many more people will buy his or her books. When a group wins the MTV awards, the ceremony is seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The result? Undoubtedly, the group will sell lots more records. Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award that benefits but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicizing not only music but also MTV itself! On the surface, it seems to be a “win-win” situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you two questions—how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place? 32.Why are some successful people like Shakespeare mentioned at the beginning of the passage?________ A. To show great admiration. B. To answer the question. C. To prepare for the topic. D. To provide the background. 33.Artists and scientists used to receive money from . A. rich people’s support B. the government C. different awards D. sales of their works 34.The writer thinks awards actually do a better job in . A. getting the winners’ great achievements recognized B. earning more money for the awards ceremony sponsors C. improving the status of the greatest scientists or artists D. financially supporting a scientist’s or an artist’s work 35.What is the writer’s attitude towards awards ceremonies? A. Subjective. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever used any language learning apps?
