B Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. He was famous because of the books he wrote for children. They combine funny words, pictures, and social opinion. Dr Seuss wrote his first book for children in 1937. It is called And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street. A number of publishers refused to publish it. They said it was too different. A friend finally published it. Soon other successful books followed. Over the years, he wrote more than forty children's books. They were fun to read. Yet his books sometimes dealt with serious subjects. By the middle 1940s, Dr Seuss had become one of the best-loved and most successful writers of children's books. He had a strong desire to help children. In 1954, Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books weren't interesting. Dr Seuss decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. In 1957, Dr Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 225 words to write the book. This was the number of words a six-year-old should be able to read. The story is about a cat who tries to entertain two children on a rainy day while their mother is away from home. The cat is not like normal cats. It talks. The book was an immediate success. It was an interesting story and was easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today many adults say it is still one of the stories they like best. 24. What's the best title for this passage? A. Some of Dr Seuss' books for children. B. What are Dr Seuss's books mainly about? C. Dr Seuss — a famous writer of children's books. D. Why are Dr Seuss' books different? 25. What do we know about Dr Seuss's first book for children? A. It was Dr Seuss' worst book. B. It dealt with a very serious subject. C. Neither children nor adults like it. D. Many publishers didn't take it seriously at first. 26. How did Dr Seuss help children according to Paragraph 3? A. By asking others to help them in magazines. B. By writing interesting and simple books. C. By changing his old books into simpler ones. D. By giving them books for free. 27. What do the adults think of the book The Cat in the Hat? A. Interesting B. Serious C. Difficult D. Boring C When we are young we are taught that it's wrong to lie and we should always tell the truth. Unfortunately, most children lie even if they're told not to. Research carried out at the Institute of Child Study at Toronto University has shown that this might not be such a bad thing. Obviously, children who tell lies when they're two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults. According to the research, at the age of two, 20 percent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 percent lie, and at four almost 90 percent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tells lies. Lying needs much brain work, and the better the lie is, the more work the brain has to do. By training the brain early, researchers believe children will be able to think more clearly when they are adults. Recent research, carried out by the Science Museum in London, has shown some interesting facts about the way we lie as adults. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day; that's over 1,000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day. Most people think women are better liars than men although in fact they tell fewer lies. Popular women's lies include 'Nothing's wrong, I'm fine', 'I don't know where it is, I haven't touched it', and 'It wasn't that expensive'. Some people say you can lie as long as it's a white lie. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings. One of the most common lies for both men and women is 'It's just what I've always wanted', said after opening a present from their partner. 28. What will happen to young children who lie? A. They will possibly do wrong later. B. They're likely to succeed in the future. C. They will keep lying when they grow up. D. They may have a good chance of losing others' trust. 29. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 show about children? A. Older children tell bigger lies than younger ones. B. As they grow, they often lie about their age. C. The older they are, the more likely they lie. D. It's quite natural for them to tell lies. 30. What did the research by the Science Museum find out? A. Men lie more than women. B. Women are better liars than men. C. Women's lies are usually not serious. D. Men sometimes have to lie to women. 31. What's the true feeling behind the underlined part in the last paragraph? A. You know me so well. B. I don't like the present. C. You are good at picking presents. D. I am fond of the present. D In the United States, most children begin attending school when they are five years old. Public education is free and most children go to school near their homes. School in these early years is fun. Children learn to read and write. And they also play games and go on trips. There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books. The situation changes as children become older. The subjects become more difficult. Students must learn about world history, algebra (代数), and the life sciences. Tests become more common. Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard, and advance. However, most serious students only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school. High school students who hope to continue their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the SAT. The test has two parts. The first part tests the students' ability with numbers and mathematical skills. The second part tests the students' ability in the English language. The SAT test is very important. A high school student who gets a high score on the two parts of the test has a good chance to enter a top American college. For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for the SAT. 32. What does the underlined phrase “hitting the books” mean in the passage? A. working hard for the future B. studying a subject carefully C. reading books in a hurry D. reading books with great effort 33. Which of the following statements can best express the main idea of the text? A. The SAT is the most important test for the students who want to go to college. B. Education is not easy in the United States. C. “Hitting the books” is important for the students who want to have a bright future. D. The more you want to learn, the more tests you have to pass. 34. American children need ________ if they want to study in public school. A. work hard at their lessons B. not pay for the education C. hit the books D. take many tests 35. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text? A. In America the students have to pass certain tests to continue their education. B. Young children needn't work hard at their lessons because education is free. C. Those who fail in the SAT cannot go to college. D. The students must spend a lot of time preparing for the SAT. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中两项为多余选项。 Be at your best! What does your brain need to work well?
