Sometimes the third graders didn’t welcome John into their group and usually tricked him. This was not because he was older, but because he was “different”. You see, John suffered from a condition called Downs’s Syndrome. This made him “different”, with his facial characteristics, slow responses and mental problems. One Sunday after Easter, the Sunday school teacher gathered some plastic eggs that pulled apart in the middle. The teacher gave one to each child. On that beautiful spring day, the children were to go out and discover for themselves some symbol of “new life” and place it inside the plastic eggs. After the children returned to the classroom, the teacher opened their eggs one by one, asking each child to explain that symbol of “new life”. The first opened egg contained a flower. Everyone cheered. In another one was a butterfly….When the teacher opened the last egg, it was empty. “That’s stupid,” said someone. The teacher felt a pull at his shirt. It was John. Looking up, John said, “It’s mine. I did it. It’s empty. I have new life, because the tomb is empty.” Not a sound was heard in class at all. From that day on, John became a real part of the group. They welcomed him, and whatever made him different was never mentioned again. John’s family knew he wouldn’t live a long life, for there were too many things wrong with him. 26. The underlined word “condition” in the first paragraph probably means ________. A. grade B. status C. disease D. health 27. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________. A. The 8-year-olds were friendly to John B. The 8-year-olds were sometimes cruel C. John was really different in school D. John was older and more sensitive 28. The teacher gave each child one plastic egg to let them ________. A. put some symbol of “new life” into it B. play around on that beautiful spring day C. try to pull it apart in the middle D. go out and discover themselves 29. After John explained his new life, ________. A. The class thought he was clever. B. He began to study in the class. C. The class fell silent. D. He felt dying. 30. We learn from the passage that ________. A. The teacher used to have classes outdoors B. John’s new life wish was empty C. John was healthy as a whole D. John was accepted by his classmates in the end B Until the twentieth century cigarettes were not an important threat to public health. Men used tobacco mainly in the form of cigars. They chewed tobacco, piped tobacco, and snuffed. Most women did not use tobacco at all. The cigarette industry began in 1870s with the development of the cigarette manufacturing machine. This made it possible to produce great numbers of cigarettes very quickly, and it reduced the price. Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit. About forty-three percent of the adult men and thirty-one percent of the adult women in the United States smoke cigarettes regularly. It is encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have quit smoking. Seventy-five percent of the male population and forty-six percent of the female population have smoked cigarettes for some time during their lives, but twenty-six percent of these men and eleven percent of the women have stopped smoking. The number of persons who have given up smoking is increasing. Men as a group smoke more than women. Among both men and women the age group with the highest proportion of smokers is the age group 24—44. Income, education, and occupation all play a part in determining a person’s smoking habit. City people smoke more than people living on farms. Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes. On the other hand, if a well-educated man with a higher income smokes, he’s likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day. The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower educational groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily. Among teenagers the picture is similar. There are fewer teenager smokers from upper-income, well-educated families, and also fewer from families living in farm areas. High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who don’t plan to continue their education after high school. Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke. 31. The underlined word “picture” in the last paragraph probably means_________. A. situation B. photo C. painting D. teenager 32. Which group of people smoked more according to the passage? A. The group of women. B. The group of teenagers. C. The group of men. D. The group of old people. 33. Which of the following factors will be likely to decide whether a person smokes or not? A. income and sex. B. education and occupation C. sex and age. D. all the above. 34. According to the passage, if a teenager doesn’t plan to go to college, and if his parents both smoke, he will ___________. A. probably not smoke in the future. B. probably start to smoke in the future. C. persuade his parents to give up smoking. D. hate his parents as well as other smokes. 35. Which of the following isn’t true? A. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that cigarettes became an important threat to public. B. More and more people are giving up smoking. C. A poorly-educated woman with lower income is more likely to smoke than a well-educated woman with high income. D. There are the most smokers in the age group of 24-44. 第二部分 基础知识考查 四、单词拼写。(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 36. His a________ of drugs barred him from the contest. 37.
