Last Monday. at the beginning of class, I asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth removed. Then he went on to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I'd read somewhere before: Ever morning when you get up: you have a choice about how you want to live that day. I said,“I choose to be cheerful.,“Let me give you an example,” I continued.“Besides teaching here, I also teach at a college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again but the engine wouldn't work. So I put my flashes on, took my books, and walked down the road to the college. As soon as I got there, I called AAA (汽车协会) and asked for a tow truck to meet me at my car after class. The secretary there asked me what had happened.“ This is my lucky day." I replied, smiling. “Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day? What do you mean?" “My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't," I replied,“Instead,it broke down at the perfect place: off the freeway; within walking distance of here. I' m still able to teach my class, and I've been able to ask for the tow truck to meet me after class! If my car was meant to break down today. I couldn't have been arranged in a more convenient way. I ended my story. In spite of (尽管)the early hour, no one in my class seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. 24. It is easy to get stuck, both spiritually and physically by having too much. This is why minimalism (极简主义) and living simply should be your resolution for 2018. Economic development results in a lot of consumerism(消费): get a good job, get a nice car, and settle into a beautiful house. But some people say that our lives could use a little lightening these days: We work and work and work to only buy and buy and buy- but does all that material wealth really lead to our happiness? Are we filling our time with unnecessary things, when we should be filling our time with friends, value, and service? An article from the website,Becoming Minimalist, points out the problem with this cycle (循环)in the best way, “Nobody really believes happiness is directly tied to the number of things we own. Yet almost all of us live like it. We get stuck in it. We work more hours than ever before, earn more income, but save less. Minimalism isn't all about ridding( 摆脱) consumerism and products from your life. Minimalism is about finding your own sense of self and focusing on the things you love. It is about creating a lifestyle that is focused on only those people and things that enrich you. These days, minimalistic living can come in many forms. We think the most practical form of minimalistic living for us is to follow our list: How You Can Live Lighter in 2018. ●Purge Your Closet: Take a day and clear out all of your drawers and closets. If something doesn't have special meaning or adds no value to your life----give it away. Have only what you need and what you can see. ●Test Those Limits: See how long you can go without shopping. Give yourself a limit, whether it be two weeks or six months , whether it be avoiding a certain mall or buying clothes. Then put your self-will to the test. After your allowed time, chances are you will realize all those extra blouses weren't worth it and you will set yourself up for future spending control. ●Cut the Cord(束缚): This sometimes means giving up your modern technology: TV, cell phone, computer, etc. Limit yourself to only a few hours of TV per week, or only 30 minutes of social media per day. You'll make more time for the things and people that you love and clear out some unnecessary noise from your life. ●Live to Your Goals: Find out what your life goals and values are. Then, see what may help you or stop you from achieving this goal. Cut out that which doesn't lead to your happiness and success and add more of what does. Remember, a pared down lifestyle doesn't mean less success or less happiness. It represents your freedom to focus on the things in life that really matter. 28. The cycle “people work and work only to buy and buy" shows. A. people get stuck physically and spiritually B. people don't believe wealth leads to happiness C. people don't want to save more D. people fall in love with buying 29. To practise minimalistic living, you should A. give away your drawers and closets B. go to the shopping mall every six months C. have 30 minutes of social media per day D. discover your life goals and values 30. The words “pared down" in the last paragraph probably mean: A. free B. light C. popular D. convenient 31. Which of the following best explains the writer's opinion? A. It might take you a long time to wait for the “right” thing. B. Clear out the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. C. Change yourself with the development of society. D. Freedom is more important than success. D Hundreds of new drivers have been given bans (禁令) for using their mobile phones at the wheel, as part of stricter new laws introduced. In March, the punishment for driving while on the phone was doubled to six points — meaning drivers with less than two years’ experience faced a ban. New laws meant the punishment for being caught on a mobile phone at the wheel was increased to six points. The new rules were introduced in England, Scotland and Wales. Drivers who get six points within two years of passing their test will lose their license, creating a one-strike rule for mobile phone users. To get back behind the wheel, new drivers have to retake both the theory and practical parts of the driving test. Mr. Williams in the RAC said, “These people have spent hours and hours and hundreds of pounds learning to drive to gain their personal freedom only to throw it all away through this foolish behavior. The only comfort is that they won’t be drawn into some terrible crashes caused by the distraction (使人分心的事物) of a hand-held mobile phone.” When the new laws were introduced, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said they would act as a strong warning to mobile phone users. However, the numbers suggested a total of 15,752 drivers received the punishment of six points for using a mobile phone between March and August. This is an increase from 15, 237 drivers in the same period of last year. National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead on roads Policing, Chief Constable Anthony Bangham, said the police took the offence (违法行为) seriously. “This is not a small offence and is never a risk worth taking because a moment’s distraction behind the wheel can change lives forever.” “Our message is simple — don’t do it,” he added. 32. What can we infer from Paragraph 1? A. The new laws have not been passed. B. The new laws are not strict enough. C.Drivers with less than two years’ experience won’t be affected. D. Punishment for driving while phoning used to be three points. 33. What will happen if a Welsh citizen who got a licence last year gets six points? A.He will be fined a lot. B.He must learn the new rules. C.He will lose his driving licence. D.He will be given a warning. 34. When the new laws were first introduced, _________. A.traffic accidents were cut down B. there were still many drivers who broke them C.drivers thought the laws were unfair to them D.fewer people broke them compared 35. What does Anthony Bangham mean? A. The police didn’t take the new rules seriously. B. The roads policy should be improved for safety. C. A moment of carelessness may cause big accidents. D. The laws need to be improved a lot and retested. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从后面的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As teens grow older, it’s normal for them to spend more time with friends. It’s a normal part of teens’ development and a lot of social position is healthy. 36 If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to limit (限制) the amount of time your teens spends with friends. ·Time with friends influences other responsibilities. If your teen ignored his responsibilities because he is spending too much time with friends or chatting with them on social media, he needs help in managing his time, he should get in the way of doing homework, finishing things or taking care of other responsibilities. 37 Provide enough guidance until he’s better able to read to refuse invitations from friends. · 38 Don’t stop your teen from having any contact with his friends. However, that is likely to cause bad results. Your teen may simply think he can’t hang out with his friends because you won’t let him — not because he recognizes they’re bad. Create rules that will help your teen make healthy choices. Make it clear that there will be results for misbehavior. ·Your teen is breaking the rules. Spending time with friends is a special right. 39 Don’t give him unlimited access (接触的机会) to his friends if he’s not earning that special right. ·Your teen is hardly at home. 40 If your teen wants to spend the night at friends’ home more often than usual, set some limits to make sure that he’s spending time with family.
