The old man’s beard was glazed by winter’s frost while he waited for a ride across the river. The wait seemed endless. His body became numb and stiff from the frigid north wind. It was long before he heard the faint, steady rhythm of hooves (马蹄) along the frozen path. Anxiously watching several horsemen coming up, he let the first one pass by without any effort to get his attention, then another passed by, and another. Finally, the last rider drew near where the old man sat like a snow statue when old man caught his eyes and said, “Sir, would you mind giving an old man a ride to the other side?” Stopping his horse, the rider replied, “Sure! Jump aboard.” Seeing the old man unable to lift his half-frozen body from the ground, the horseman got down to help him. The horseman took him not just across the river, but to his destination just a few miles away. As they approached the tiny but cozy cottage, the horseman’s curiosity caused him to inquire, “Sir, I noticed you let several other riders pass by without making an effort to secure a ride. Then I came up and you immediately asked me for a ride. I am curious why, on such a bitter night, you would wait and ask the last rider. What if I had refused and left you here?” The old man looked the rider straight in the eyes and replied, “I reckon I know people pretty good. I looked into the eyes of the other riders and immediately found no concern for my situation. It would have been useless even to ask them for a ride. But when I looked into your eyes, your gentle spirit would welcome the opportunity to give me assistance in my time of need.” Those heart-warming comments touched the horseman deeply. “I’m so grateful for what you have said,” he told the old man. “May I never get too busy in my own affairs that I fail to respond to the needs of others with kindness and compassion.” With that, Thomas Jefferson turned his horse around and made his way back to the White House. 4. Why didn’t the old man ask the previous riders for a ride? A. Because he was waiting for the last rider. B. Because his efforts failed to get their attention. C. Because he assumed they had no concern for him. D. Because he was too numb to lift his half-frozen body. 5. What caused the last rider to stop and help the old man? A. the old man’s poor situation B. kindness and sympathy C. his own affairs D. The old man’s warm comments 6. What do you know about the old man? A. He gave the last rider an opportunity to help. B. He lived in a cozy cottage a few miles away. C. He judged people by looking into their eyes. D. He recognized the president at first sight. 7. Which can be the best title of this text? I looked into the eyes of the other riders and immediately found no concern for my situation. B。 C Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think. It may let you surf the Internet listen to music and snap photos wherever you are…but it also turns you into a workaholic, it seems. A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study by technology retailer Pixmania reveals the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. More than 90 percent of office workers have email-enabled phones, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess(承认) they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they make work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., with more than a third checking their first emails in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 p.m. and midnight. Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become , the more is expected of us in a work capacity(容量).” 8. What can we conclude from the text? A. All that glitters is not gold. B. It never rains but pours. C. Every coins has two sides. D. It’s no good crying over spilt milk. 9. The underlined word “accessing” in the third paragraph can be replaced by “________”. A. calling B. reaching C. getting D. using 10. Which of the following is true according to the text? A. The average UK working time is between nine and twelve hours. B. Nine- tenths spent over three hours checking work emails. C. One-fourth check their first mail between 11 p.m. and midnight. D. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 a.m. and 8 .am .. 11. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Workaholics like smartphones. B Smartphones bring about extra work. C. Smartphones make our life easier. D. Employers don’t like smartphones. 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. B 【解析】 这是一篇说明文。这篇文章主要介绍使用智能手机也许并不像你想的那样明智。使用智能手机可以让你随时随地上网、听音乐、拍照片……但也可能让你变成工作狂。最新调查显示,智能手机能让你随时查收邮件,因此这种花哨的手机会让你每天的工作时间延长多达两个小时。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段It may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are…but it also turns you into a workaholic, it seems.文章主要介绍了使用智能手机不好的方面,虽然可以给人们提供很多方便,但是也会无形中延长人们的工作时间,由此推断出是“凡事都有两面”,故选C。 【9题详解】 词义猜测题。本段是介绍人们对手机的使用情况,故判断意思是“使用”,而且根据文章第二段首句A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the smartphone adds as much as two hours to your working day. 在任何时候都可以访问电子邮件,让你的工作日增加了2个小时。中access也可以进行推断,所以换线出的意思为“使用”。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight. 四分之一的人在晚上11点和午夜之间检查他们的邮件。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。文章首段提出….but it also turns you into a workaholic, it seems.,但它似乎也会让你变成一个工作狂。然后在下文进行了详细的介绍,由此可知文章中心内容是讲述智能手机给人无形中延长了工作时间,故选B。 D Communities change in all sorts of ways over time. My few trips home over the years have given me an idea of the long-term influence on a community when population falls even while wealth rises. I come from one of the beautiful seaside towns that dot the Jersey Shore just seventy-five miles south of New York City. When I was growing up thirty-five years ago, these were lively and busy communities filed year-round with resident(居民) and full of tourists all summer. Today, I notice one big change since my childhood: no people. No children playing around, no traffic in the streets and no customers looking through the storefronts. The big beautiful Victorian homes that housed families with five or more children and grandparents mow sit quiet. The line of old bicycles in the drive has been replaced by a single luxury(豪华的) car from other states. Few who grew up here can afford to live in their parents’ homes today. Over time, the beauty of the place along with its perfect location turned a middle-class, family-centered neighborhood into a collection of vacation homes for the rich. The town is too expensive for the “locals” but too far from the City for workers. It is not bad-just different. Unless of course- 配套讲稿:
