B “I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,”said Lisa,a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me?” Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people,no matter what their age or character—even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular—experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all,we’ve all heard “No man is an island.” That’s true. We all need others in our lives. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends,we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection(拒绝),many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends,we’ve got to get beyond this. If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures. Be willing to take the initiative(主动权).If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a nonaggressive(无攻击性的) manner that you are interested in being friends with her. Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone,go over and talk to her. And don’t let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You’ll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance. Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask”Do you have a dog?”Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no”questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a oneword answer. 24.Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry? A.To set a sad tone. B.To share Lisa’s pain. C.To introduce the topic. D.To teach readers a lesson. 25.What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage? A.Being refused by others. B.Putting ourselves in danger. C.Being treated in a rude way. D.Losing interest in communicating. 26.What can we know from Paragraph 5? A.Shy people are hard to talk to. B.Popular people are often easygoing. C.Just waiting for chances will waste our time. D.A proper manner is important in making friends. 27. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes” or “no” questions? A.It is considered unfriendly. B.It will leave a bad first impression. C.It shows the poor quality of the speaker. D.It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going. C As the coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak continues, many Americans are fearful of using public transportation. They are also looking for ways to get exercise without going to a gym. So, it may not be surprising that the pandemic (疫情) has led to a major increase in bicycle sales. In the US, bicycles at big stores have sold out. And small bicycle stores cannot keep up with demand for “family-style”bicycles: the low-cost, easy-to-ride models. “The bicycle industry is seeing its biggest sales increase since the oil crisis of the 1970s,”said Jay Townley, an industry expert. He compared the sale of bicycles to the rush to buy products like toilet paper at the start of the pandemic. The rise in bicycle sales is not happening just in the US. Italy has created bicycle paths for the growing number of people who want to avoid public transportation. In London, city officials plan to ban cars from some central roads. Bike shop owners in Manila say demand is even stronger than what they see at Christmas time. Of course, you can only buy a bicycle if you can find one. In the US, the shortages now mean it may take many months to get a bicycle. High demand is not the only reason for the shortage. Many bicycle factories were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19. The increase in bicycle demand began in March as countries began to close down. In April, the sale of bicycles increased 200 percent in the US. Joe Minutolo is the co-owner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop in Maine. He said he hoped the increased sales meant a change in the way people think about transportation. “People are having a chance to rethink things,”he said, “Maybe we’ll all learn something out of this, and something really good will happen.” 28. What causes the increase in bicycle sales? A. Shortage of public transportation. B. Outbreak of the coronavirus. C. People’s desire to defeat disease. D. People’s fear of natural disasters. 29. What change has the pandemic caused in Italy? A. More bikes are sold than at Christmas time. B. “Family-style”bicycles are in great need. C. Cars are banned from some central roads. D. New bicycle paths have been built. 30. What can we know from Paragraph 4? A. It’s impossible to buy a bike. B. Bike factories were closed in April. C. High demand for bikes began in March. D. It takes many months to produce a bike. 31. What is Joe Minutolo’s attitude towards the increased sales of bicycles? A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Critical. D Does your local high school have a student newspaper? Only 1 in 8 of New York’s public high schools has student newspapers – and many of those are published just a few times a year. A few more are online, which can leave out poorer schools. Rebecca Dwarka, an 18-year-old senior who works for her student paper said, “Facebook is the new way of finding out what happened. Nobody wants to actually sit down and read a whole article about it. This makes a ‘whole article’ sound a little like a long sentence in lonely places.” I am not nostalgic(怀旧的) about high school student newspapers and never worked for mine. I put out what was then called a personal magazine with a group of friends because we wanted to write about peace, war and rock and roll without school officials warning us not to make jokes about the local officials. School newspapers are in decline because students now find out what happened on social networking websites. This is a little discouraging because it proves that for millions of Americans, journalism(新闻业)is becoming a do-it-yourself thing. Every citizen can be a reporter. When something happens, we look for social media messages. Facebook posts and Tweets have become the means by which citizens and reporters can prove, deny (否认), pass on stories and express opinions without the press’ challenging, researching or slowing the message. But truly good journalism is a craft, not just a blog post. It requires seeing something carefully and it uses an eye for details to help prove a larger view. And even journalism that gives an opinion tries to be fair. If school newspapers begin to disappear, I hope there are other ways for students to learn that. 32.What can we infer from Rebecca’s words? A.Students like reading detailed articles. B.Facebook is the quickest way of spreading news. C.School newspapers are becoming unpopular. D.Long sentences are becoming popular in lonely places. 33.What does the underlined word “decline” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Fall. B.Popularity C.Increase D.Failure 34.What should good journalism do according to the author? A.Ignore some details. B.Spread a message quickly. C.Act as blog posts in modern times. D.Give an opinion in a fair way. 35.Which opinion does the writer intend to express in this passage? A.Social media is becoming more and more important. B.Everyone can become a reporter at present. C.Social networking brings about new journalism. D.High school newspapers shouldn’t be replaced by social media. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make New Friends When you start high school, you need to make some new friends because your old friends may be away from you now.
