It is the story of a young boy named Pi who spends 227 days at sea with a small group of animals after disaster strikes their ship and is an account of his journey of survival and hardship. Piscine (“Pi” is short for Piscine) Molitor Patel, on whom Life of Pi is based, is a young boy living in Pondicherry, India, where his father owns a zoo. The story starts when Patel's family decide to move to Canada, along with their zoo animals for their new home. However, because of the bad weather, the ship sinks. Pi, an orangutan(猩猩), an injured zebra, a hyena(鬣狗) and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker are the only survivors who take shelter in a small lifeboat. Both the injured zebra and the orangutan are soon killed and eaten by the hyena. The tiger in turn kills and eats the hyena, leaving just the two of them alone on the boat now. In an effort to avoid being eaten by Richard Parker, Pi acts himself as the head of the group and remains safe from harm. Since he does not want the tiger to die for fear of going mad by being alone on the boat, he fishes and feeds the two of them in order to stay alive. The life of Pi then enters its third stage when their lifeboat washes up on the shores of Mexico and the tiger escapes into a nearby forest leaving Pi alone. After the Mexicans refuse to believe Pi's story, he changes his story by replacing the animals with his mother, a cook and a sailor and asks the Mexicans which one they prefer. They prefer hearing the first story though they do not believe a word of it. In my view, Life of Pi is a must read book for all those who love reading. 1. Through the passage, we know the book Life of Pi ________. A. was written 2 years ago B. was awarded two prizes C. is about a pleasant voyage D. is a good history book 2. In the book Life of Pi the hyena is killed by ________. A. Piscine B. the zebra C. the orangutan D. Richard 3. How does Pi escape being eaten by the tiger? A. By catching fishes for the tiger. B. By locking the tiger in a cage. C. By being the head of them two. D. By fighting with the tiger. 4. Which can be the author's attitude to the book Life of Pi ? A. Supportive. B. Disappointed. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful. 1. B 2. D 3. C 4. Perhaps, leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety! But there are a few people who will get into cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up. “Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop. Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm seasons. Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.” However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.” 5. For storm chasing, storm chasers should first ________. A. stay patiently for the storm to develop B. collect information for a coming storm C. drive straight to the center of the storm D. find shelters to hide themselves at once 6. Beginners of storm chasing are advised ________. A. to do it in an organized way B. to stay far away from a storm C. to spend much more time on it D. not to run along in a heavy rain 7. “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph really means ________. A. a lot of money is spent in chasing storm B a storm gifts the greatest show on Earth C. storm chasing is worth hours of waiting D. the best view deserves your being brave 8. What can we learn from the text? A. Storm chasing is just a game fit for young people. B. Some storm chasers were killed during the storms. C. Sometimes storm chasers just feel a bit disappointed. D. Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world. B 6. A 7. D 8. 由第二段中“A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.”( 一个风暴追逐者每天从查看互联网上最新的天气预报开始,然后驱车1000公里到达风暴将要发生的地方,等待风暴发展。) 由第三段最后一句“If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm seasons.”( 如果你是一个初学者,在暴风雨季节加入一个追逐风暴的度假小组要安全得多。) 故选A项。 由最后一段中的““When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”” 由倒数第二段中的“Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”( 有时候,你可以坐上几个小时,等待着什么事情发生,而你得到的只是蓝天和几阵小雨。) C Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. Some scientists had already observed comets then, and Halley studied them carefully. The orbit (轨道) of one special comet was a very hard mathematical (数学的) problem. He couldn’t work it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Newton, who was an excellent mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse (椭圆). Now Halley set to work. He worked out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. The different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what comet would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he has died some years before. Ever since then that comet has been called Halley's comet, in his honor. 9. Halley made his discovery ________. A. by using the work of other scientists B. through his own careful observation C. by doing some experiments secretly D. by figuring out some hard problems 10. Halley made an amazing, but right prediction in ________. A. 1607 B. 1682 C. 1705 D. 1811 11. This passage in general is about ________. A. Halley and other scientists B. the orbit of a comet C. Newton and Halley D. Halley and his discovery 12. Which of the following is TRUE? A. The orbit of a comet was a round shape. B. Halley did not live up to the year 1758. C. Halley was an Australian mathematician. D. Halley worked out the comet’s orbit first. A 10. C 11. D 12. 根据第一段中的“He studied the observations of comets which other scientists had made.(他研究了其他科学家对彗星的观察)”可知,哈雷是借鉴其他科学家的成果而取得这一发现的。故选A。 根据第五段中的“He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested.(他断定这颗彗星将出现在1758年。再过53年,哈雷的预测才能得到验证)”可知,哈雷做出这个预言的时间是(1758-53)1705年。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。纵观全文可知,文章的中心就是哈雷以及他发现的哈雷彗星,文章的每一段都在介绍哈雷及他的发现,另外也可以从文章的首尾句看出本文的主旨大意。故选D。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he has died some years before.(1758年,彗星出现在天空中。哈雷没有看到,因为他几年前就死了)”可知,哈雷没有活到1758年。故选B。 D There are many gardening tips. Some suggest playing music for your house plants, having conversations with them, or even giving them a gentle touch now and then. Most of these practices are probably more for the benefit of the gardener than the garden, and generally harmless enough but except the last one. Your plants really dislike it when you touch them. A new study out of the La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food has found that most plants are extremely sensitive to touch, and even a light touch can seriously affect their growth. “The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, can make a huge gene(基因) response in the plant,” Jim Whelan, who led the new study, said. “Within 30 minutes of being touched, 10% of the plant’s genome(基因组) is changed. This causes a huge loss of energy which is taken away from plant growth. If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30%.” Whelan and his team are still trying to find out why plants respond, at the genetic level, so strongly. They do have some theories, however. We know that when an insect lands on a plant, genes are awakened preparing the plant to defend itself against being eaten ,” said Dr. Yan Wang, co-author of the study. Until more research is done, it’s just a guess at this point. Still, the findings might already lead to new methods for how agriculturalists deal with their crops to best promote(促进) healthier growth. It’s worth noticing that while the study found that plants often respond to just a single touch in negative ways, it’s really repeated touching that causes lasting unhealthy growth.
