Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show. Potato Eaters Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of, His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting. Irises Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum(精神病院) where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment(色素) faded over time and has now turned blue. Cafe Terrace at Night Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post- impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters. Wheat Field With Cypresses This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital. Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size- which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister. 21. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in? A. Irises. B . Potato Eaters. C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses. 22. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises? A. Purple. B.Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow. 23. What do the last two paintings have in common? A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy. C. They were signed by the artist. D. They were painted on the ground. B Steve Sterner’s job as a pianist playing music for silent movies started on a fancy idea about four decades ago. He was at a friend’s party and decided to make sound by beating the ivories(象牙)while a silent cartoon played. Impressed with the performance, his friend invited him to play along to a full-length feature silent film at the theater. This fall, Mr. Sterner, 67 years old, is celebrating his 35th anniversary as a piano accompanist at Film Forum by playing 12 silent movies of his choice at the theater in Greenwich Village, He has picked movies starring Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton and ones directed by Frank Borzage. The series started in August and goes until early November. “All these films are wonderful.” said Mr. Sterner, who is also an actor and a singer. People might not have heard of or seen them, but they are little gems(宝石)waiting to be discovered. The silent-film era peaked almost a century ago and fizzled out with the arrival of the talkies, or movies with synchronized(同步的)sound. But now, silent films are making a comeback in New York City, drawing more attention of young people. Film Forum, a nonprofit, puts on two to three silent movies with live accompanying music every quarter, including at least one silent comedy for its junior audience. These showings are always popular and often sold out, with at least 100 people typically attending each screening, according to its program director Bruce Goldstein. Over the past three decades, he said he has seen more people, especially younger audiences, coming to see silent films. “For many years people didn’t pay attention to silent films,” Mr. Goldstein said. “But now people discover that silent films are the roots for movies,” “I feel like today because of smart phones and social media, our left brain is filled with information. Silent films, more than other forms of cinema, engage your right brain and use your imagination, 99 Mr. Model said. 24. Why did Steve Sterner begin to accompany silent films? A.He was invited by his friends. B. He was a famous actor and singer. C. He was impressed with the cartoon. D. He liked beating ivories. 25.What do we know about Film Forum? A. It was started by Steve Sterner. B. It makes money by giving shows. C. It’s designed to show popular films. D. It contributed to making silent films popular. 26.Which can replace the underlined phrase “fizzled out” in Para. 4? A.Found its way. B. Became less popular. C. Took off. D. Died out. 27. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To introduce silent films. B. To advertise the Film Forum. C. To praise Steve Sterner’s job. D. To show the comeback of silent films. C The unusual whistle language used as a means of communication by villagers in the remote and mountainous northern Turkey has been added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. (非物质文化遗产) The language is a highly developed high-pitch system of whistling to communicate in rugged(崎岖的) areas where people mostly cannot see each other. It can allow people to communicate across great distances, up to 5 kilometers. Compared with other similar whistle languages in Spain’s Canary Islands, in Mexico, or in Greek villages, it has a higher tone and larger vocabulary. This unusual form of communication, which dates some 500 years ago, to the Ottoman Empire, was born from sheer necessity and widespread across the Black Sea regions. But 50 years ago, it suffered the impact of the progression of technology and nowadays the rapid growth of cellular mobile systems has put this cultural heritage(遗产)under serious threat. For centuries, the language has been passed on from grandparent to parent, from parent to child. Now, though, many of its most skilful speakers who use their tongue, teeth and fingers are aging all becoming physically weak. Young people are no longer interested in learning the language or in finding ways to update its vocabulary with new words, and in a few generations it may be gone for good. “Our bird language is very convenient and efficient to communicate across the valleys. It has many benefits over yelling, which is bad for our throats.” said Avni Kocek, head of the bird village adding that despite setbacks because of technology, “Bird language is still used by many of us. Whistle language is transmitted from our elders to us and we have the duty to transmit it to our children. We are making efforts to keep our culture alive through the annual Bird Language Festival.” Besides, the bird language has been required to be taught at primary schools since 2014 by district authorities in order to instill(逐步实施)the practice in younger generations. 28. What is the bird language’s advantage over other similar whistle languages? A. It is used as a means of communication. B. It is older and has a larger number of users. C. It can send more messages to farther places. D. It is a completely different system of whistling. 29. What’s the biggest threat to the bird language? A. Other whistle languages are more effectively protected. B. The need to use it in everyday life is disappearing. C. Many of its most skilful speakers are growing old. D. Young people find it too difficult to learn well enough. 30. What’s the most effective measure so far taken to protect the bird language? A. It has become a subject at primary schools. B. Bird Language Festival is celebrated every month. C. Cellular mobile systems are not allowed in the area. D. All parents are required to transmit it to their children. 31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Preserving the Endangered Bird language B. The Story of a Bird Language Speaker C. Celebrating the Bird Language Festival D. The Disappearance of Bird Language D In a recent series of experiments at the University of California, researchers studied toddlers’ (学步儿童) thinking about winners and losers, bullies (欺凌) and victims. In the first experiment, toddlers watched a scene in which two puppets (木偶) had conflicting goals: One was crossing a stage from right to left, and the other from left to right. The puppets met in the middle and stopped. Eventually one puppet bowed down and moved aside, letting the other one pass by. Then researchers asked the toddlers which puppet they liked. The result: 20 out of 23 toddlers picked the higher-status puppet — the one that did not bow or move aside. It seems that individuals can gain status for being dominant (占优势的) and toddlers like winners better than losers. But then researchers had another question: Do toddlers like winners no matter how they win? So, researchers did another experiment very similar to the one described above. But this time, the conflict ended because one puppet knocked the other down and out of the way. Now when the toddlers were asked who they liked, the results were different: Only 4 out of 23 children liked the winner. These data suggest that children already love a winner by the age of 21-31 months. This does not necessarily mean that the preference is inborn: 21 months is enough time to learn a lot of things. But if a preference for winners is something we learn, we appear to learn it quite early. Even more interesting, the preference for winners is not absolute. Children in our study did not like a winner who knocked a competitor down. This suggests that already by the age of 21-31 months, children’s liking for winners is balanced with other social concerns, including perhaps a general preference for nice or helpful people over aggressive ones. In a time when the news is full of stories of public figures who celebrate winning at all costs, these results give us much confidence. Humans understand dominance, but we also expect strong individuals to guide, protect and help others. This feels like good news. 32. One of the purposes of the experiments is to . A. teach toddlers how to gain higher status B. offer toddlers a chance to watch a scene C. observe the process of toddlers’ solving a conflict D. find out toddlers’ attitude toward winners and losers 33. The toddlers regarded bowing and moving aside as a sign of . A. obeying rules B. gaining status C. giving in to the other D. showing good manners 34. What does the second experiment tell us about toddlers? A. They are excellent learners. B. They are always changeable. C. They show mercy to the loser. D. They value kindness over winning. 35. What does the author think of the results of the series of experiments? A.Disappointing. B.Encouraging. C.Unexpected. D.Controversial. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I don’t know anyone who has been handed only roses. We all encounter hardships. Some we see coming; others take us by surprise. 36 The question is: When these things happen, what do we do next? When someone is suffering, we need to follow the Platinum Rule: 37 Put ourselves in others’ shoes and respond with understanding or better yet, action. 38 It comes from deep within us and from support outside us. It comes from gratitude for what’s good in our lives and from leaning in to the suck. 39 I learned that when life pulls you under, you can kick against the bottom, break the surface, and breathe again. Although it can be extremely difficult to grasp, the disappearance of one possible self can free us to imagine a new possible se- 配套讲稿:
