Even though major museums exhibited his works and the director of the American Craft Museum called him a national treasure, Mr. Nakashima rejected the label of artist. For almost fifty years he simply went on shaping wood into beautiful chairs, tables, and cabinets. Nakashima had a clear goal. He intended to make each piece of furniture as perfect as possible. Even making a box was an act of creation, because it produced an object that had never existed before. Initially Nakashima used local wood, sometimes from his own property. Later, he traveled to seek out English oak, Persian walnut, African zebrawood and Indian teak. He especially liked to find giant roots that had been dug out of the ground after a tree was cut down. Nakashima felt that making this wood into furniture was a way of allowing the tree to live again. Most furniture makers prefer perfect boards, but Nakashima took pleasure in using wood with interesting knots (结疤) and cracks. These irregularities gave the wood personality and showed that the tree had lived a colourful life. He never failed to create an object that was both useful and beautiful. One early piece Nakashima designed was a threelegged chair for his small daughter, Mira, to use when she sat at the table for meals. The Mira chair became so popular that Nakashima later made both low and high versions. Another famous piece, the conoid chair, has two legs supported by bladelike feet. Always, Nakashima's designs were precise and graceful, marked by the simplicity that revealed his love for the wood. As the years passed, Nakashima's reputation grew and he received many awards. His children Mira and Kevin, now adults, joined the team of craftspeople in their father's studio. Nakashima's dream of integrating work and family had come true. 1.Which of the following best describes Nakashima? A.Generous and outgoing. B.Honest and simple. C.Capable and friendly. D.Creative and modest. 2.Which of the following is true about Nakashima? A.His artworks made trees live again. B.He always used precious wood materials. C.His chairs were beautifully designed but useless. D.He devoted himself to shaping wood. 3.What can we learn about Nakashima from the last two paragraphs? A.He loved his work and family. B.He made chairs of the same style. C.He sought for a simple life and art. D.He was lost in researching the wood. 4.What can be inferred about Mira and Kevin? A.They had an art studio of their own. B.They still lacked the ability to create artworks. C.They had a common interest with their father. D.They enjoyed the same reputation with their father. B [2020·合肥市高三第二次诊断检测] Scientists have created the world's first living, selfhealing (自愈的) robots using stem cells from frogs. Named after the African clawed frogs from which they take their stem cells, xenobots are less than a millimeter wide — small enough to travel inside human bodies. They can walk and swim, survive for weeks without food, and work together in groups. These are “entirely new life forms” , said project coleader Michael Levin, director of the Allen Discovery Center. The researchers removed living stem cells, which have the ability to develop into different cell types, from frog embryos (胚胎), and left them to incubate (孵化). Then, the cells were cut and reshaped into specific “body forms” designed by a supercomputer. “They're neither a traditional robot nor a known species of animal,” said robotics expert Joshua Bongard. The cells then began to work on their own and even have the regenerative power; when the scientists cut the living robot almost in half, its cells automatically zipped its body back up. Xenobots don't look like traditional robots — they have no shiny clothing or robotic arms. Instead, they look more like a tiny drop of moving pink flesh. The researchers say this is deliberate — this biological machine can achieve things typical robots of steel and plastic cannot do. “Traditional robots degrade over time and can produce ecological and health side effects,” researchers said in the study. As biological machines, xenobots are more environmentally friendly and safer for human health, the study said. Research is being done into using the robots to clean up radioactive waste or even microplastics from the ocean. Scientists are also trying to include a greater variety of cells — a new nervous system for example. However, some people argue that the addition of nerve cells would cause moral problems. The general public have also expressed concern that humans would be taken control of by robots. However, Michael Levin thinks there's no need to worry. “Xenobots have no ability to reproduce or evolve. The supercomputer which is used to produce them does use artificial intelligence. But for now, all is fine,” said Levin. 5.What is the text mainly about? A.The advantage of AI technology. B.The introduction of a latest robot. C.The medical value of African clawed frogs. D.The application of robots in medicine. 6.Which of the following best explains “regenerative” underlined in Paragraph 2? A.Healing by itself. B.Replacing old cells. C.Living much longer. D.Defending against attacks. 7.What do we know about xenobots? A.They can break up steel and plastic while degrading. B.They can do everything that traditional robots can do. C.They do less harm to the environment and human health. D.They often change their color deliberately while moving. 8.What is Michael Levin's attitude toward the development of xenobots? A.Ambiguous. B.Positive. C.Skeptical. D.Cautious. Ⅱ.七选五 [2020·石家庄市高三年级阶段性训练题] While marathon study sessions may be unavoidable sometimes, do your best to manage your time effectively. Reduce your workload by studying more efficiently. Before, you start studying always read your task sheet to make sure you're focusing on the right topics. __1__ This saves you looking it up. Finally, pick out the most important information, so you can study it first. __2__ Make sure you have everything you need, so you won't need to get up every few minutes to get something. Neatly place your textbooks, pens, notebooks and other study materials in your study space. This way you can easily get what you need without taking an unplanned break. Plan out your study sessions in advance. Think about the time you'll need for each task, add 10% extra time for insurance, and then schedule blocks for your tasks. __3__ Remember to include short breaks every hour or so. Break up difficult tasks into smaller steps. Tasks such as “Study for the History Final” or “Write the Term Paper” can seem unapproachable. Instead of getting confused and upset, divide big tasks into small ones. If you're studying for a final of a course, start by looking over past tests and quizzes. __4__ Smaller study tasks may also include creating outlines that summarize textbook chapters. Do your best to space out your study sessions instead of cramming Whenever possible, give yourself time to study a little bit at a time. It's better to study for three separate threehour sessions instead of one marathon ninehour session. __5__ A.Choose a quiet spot for studying. B.Prepare your area before you start studying. C.Schedule your toughest and most important tasks first. D.Study difficult subjects first to get them out of the way. E.Then divide the course into its units, and study one unit at a time. F.Additionally, ask your instructor to explain any topic that confuses you. G. Multiple shorter sessions will help you remember more information in the long run. Ⅲ.短文改错 [2020·沈阳市教学质量监测三] The forest of my hometown is beautiful no matter how the season is. I was driving slowly in this morning when I saw a deer live in the woods appear in the middle of the road. I came to the full stop, and we stared at each other. He seemed cleverly. He had been in this world for some month and I didn't want end his life. Finally, I motioned with my hand for him to go on. Having seen anything to fear, he jumped across the road. I drive on smiling at the magic of this moment but was thankful that I had been going slowly not to hit this beautiful creature. I was driving slowly this morning when I saw a deer in the woods appear in the middle of the road. I came to full stop, and we stared at each other. He seemed . He had been in this world for some and I didn't want end his life. Finally, I motioned with my hand for him to go on. Having seen to fear, he jumped across the road. I on smiling at the magic of this moment was thankful that I had been going slowly not to hit this beautiful creature. ④the改为a'冠词误用。come to a stop为固定表达,意为“停止”,所以将the改为a。 ⑦want后加to'不定式符号to漏用。want to do sth. ⑩but改为and'连词误用。
