Elon Musk -a US tech tycoon, founder of Space X- has been working on this technology. On Aug 28, Musk gave a display of the chip, which was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude. The chip, developed by Musk's company Neuralink, is the size of a coin. But don't let its size fool you. The tiny chip has over 3,000 electrodes (电极) attached to flexible threads, which can monitor about 1,000 neurons (神经元). It collects neural signals from an area of the brain, and then transmits those signals wirelessly to nearby computers, according to MSN. That enabled researchers to monitor Gertrude's brain activity while she was walking around in the display. Though the technology is still in its early stage, it is encouraging for humans. This technology would solve a lot of brain injuries and is essential for Al symbiosis, which will allow the human brain to combine with an artificial intelligence. When the device can be applied to humans, its main goal will be to help those who have mobility difficulties. Musk hopes this technology can also be used to help those with hearing and eyesight issues. Although such a device could repair those problems, putting it into practice is by no means a piece of cake. Currently, the device can transmit signals from about 500 neurons in the pig's brain. Compared to 80 billion neurons in a human brain, this number is tiny. And to cover the whole human brain also means the electrodes have to be much smaller. Also, implanting the chip into the brain poses a potential danger. There is a risk of the immune system attacking this foreign body. Right now, the hope of controlling the brain via controlling a few neurons seems overly optimistic. "There are many technological challenges ... to overcome before Neuralink can put its devices to the purposes," Yuan Lanfeng (袁兰峰), an associate professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China Daily. 24. What do we know about Elon Musk's microchip? A. It was inspired by sci-fi movie plots. B. It is able to collect wireless signals. C. It is tiny in size but powerful in function. D. It has been implanted into a human's brain. 25. What does the underlined word “that" in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. The operation of the chip in Gertrude’s brain. B. The attachment of electrodes to flexible threads. C. The development of neurons inside Gertrude's brain. D. The transmission of signals from a nearby computer 26. What is the major target of the microchip? A. To monitor animals’ brain activity. B. To help people with mobility issues. C. To develop a cure for immune system problems. D. To contribute to the research on Al technologies. 27. How does Yuan Lanfeng feel about implanting the chip into the human brain? A. Worried. B. Excited. C. Optimistic. D. Challenged. C Digital devices are great, but they can also be annoying when it comes to writing or drawing. Most of the time you must rely on your fingertips to do the typing or drawing for you, and what you wanted to write or draw might not come out the way you imagined. A new pen called “Phree”, created by Israeli company called OTM Technologies, aims to change the dependency that most of us have when it comes to writing or drawing in digital form. The Phree pen looks a lot like a regular pen in both size and shape. The difference is that you can use the Phree pen to write on any surface (from a table to a wall), and then transfer that writing directly to your target device. Phree uses a sensor called a 3D laser interferometer (激光干涉仪). The laser beams are projected (投影) on the surface and they will be reflected back to the interferometer. By analyzing these beams' tracks, the laser interferometer measures the hand motion while writing. The pen connects with your phone via a Bluetooth. Phree can be used to take notes using various applications on the target device. The notes will appear on the target device whenever you open it. You can even receive, write and send text messages using the device display and it can function as an earphone. Phree can also be used as a regular computer mouse whenever it is connected to a target device. The device can also be used as ID equipment as it can precisely analyze the way a person writes. “We see Phree as a standard input device in the mobile world, in the same way the mouse became a standard part of PC use. We also see benefits to emerging technologies like AR and VR headsets, interactive TV, and IoT (Internet of Things).” Gilad Lederer, co-founder of OTM Technologies said. 28.What inspires the OTM Technologies to create Phree? A. Drawing pictures in a better way. B. People's relying too much on typing. C. Making digital devices less annoying. D. The inconvenience of data input using fingertips. 29.How does Phree measure the movement of hands? A. By sending out laser lines. B. By connecting with the Bluetooth. C. By analyzing the reflection lines of lasers. D. By checking the writing ways of certain person. 30.What can we infer about Phree from paragraph 4? A. It can identify people. B. It can connect to the Internet. C. It can be used as a remote control. D. It can function as a device display. 31.What will Phree be like in Lederer's opinion? A. It will create more new technologies. B. It will be widely used in many areas. C. It will be the best tool to write letters. D. It will take the place of the mouse of PC. D In a new blog post for the International Monetary Fund, four researchers presented their findings from a working paper that examines the current relationship between finance and tech as well as its potential future. Gazing into their crystal ball, the researchers see the possibility of using the data from your browsing, search, and purchase history to create a more accurate mechanism for determining the credit rating of an individual or business. They believe that this approach could result in greater lending to borrowers who would potentially be denied by traditional financial institutions. At its heart, the paper is trying to wrestle with the dawning notion that the institutional banking system is facing a serious threat from tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple. The researchers identify two key areas in which this is true: Tech companies have greater access to soft-information, and messaging platforms can take the place of the physical locations that banks rely on for meeting with customers. The concept of using your web history to inform credit ratings is framed around the notion that lenders rely on hard-data that might hide the worthiness of a borrower or paint an unnecessarily bad picture during hard times. Citing soft-data points like "the type of browser and hardware used to access the internet, the history of online searches and purchases" that could be included in evaluating a borrower, the researchers believe that when a lender has a closer relationship with the potential client's history, they might be more willing to cut them some slack. “Banks tend to cushion credit terms for their long-term customers during downturns,” the paper's authors write. This is because they have a history and relationship with the customer. The researchers acknowledge that there will be privacy and policy concerns related to including this kind of soft-data in credit analysis. Getting the soft-data points would probably require companies like Facebook and Apple to loosen up their standards on linking unencrypted information with individual accounts. How they might share information with other institutions would be its own can of worms. 32. What is the approach put forward by the researchers? A. Replacing banks with soft information. B. Lending money by predicting the future. C. Determining credit ratings by web history. D. Facing the threat posed by high-tech companies. 33. Why do they advocate the new way of rating the borrower’s credit? A. Traditional finance refuse to lend money. B. The new approach helps reduce burden on banks. C. The type of hardware misleads the lender’s judgement. D. Soft information better reflects the truth than hard data. 34. Which is the closest in meaning with the underlined phrase in Paragraph 4? A. Be less strict. B. Share interests. C. Forgive others’ fault. D. Cut a piece of bread. 35. What do the researchers worry about? A. Banks will break up with customers. B. High tech companies will be in a mess. C. Sharing information may cause problems of privacy. D. Competition between tech companies will be fiercer. 第二节(共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Where you choose to stay can make or break your vacation experience. But even the most experienced travelers may not know the difference between the two main types of homes-away-from-home—hotels and motels. 36 The answer isn’t as simple as you’d think. These two types of lodging (住宿) have the same basic purpose—a place for travelers to sleep. 37 For instance, they came to be for different reasons, and at very different times. The word“hotel”dates back to the 1600s and comes from a French word, hotel. That word, just like the English one, referred to a place that provides lodging, meals, entertainment, and other services to travelers. 38 This word dates back to the 1920s and combines the words “hotel” and “motor”. As America’s major highway system developed, so did motels, filling the need for roadside stops for motorists- 配套讲稿:
