Dear Irene,
Thanks for your letter of 20th December to Tom and me. Tom’s mother sent it to us here in England. I thought I had reply myself since, as you know, your brother is not good at writing letters.
You asked whether Tom’s application for a scholarship has been successful. As you can see, it was. He is doing a one-year postgraduate course in world history here at Lancaster University. The house we live in is near the university, we have to buy a used car which is necessary because the bus service here is very poor.
We arrived in England at the beginning of September, and stayed her for three weeks with my cousin Jeff, who owns a restaurant here. This is the first time he had met my husband. Then we went to Cambridge for a week, where Tom had to attend a meeting and after that we came up to Lancaster and hand two weeks to find somewhere to live and generally got organized before Tom’s course began.
The weather has been quite a change from home. Last week we had some snow, the first we had ever seen. We went outside and threw snowballs at each other, just like children.
We got on well with most of the English people we have met, although we had some difficulty at first understanding the northern accent.
Well, that’s about all our news. Tom’s course is going well, and if he passes his exams we will be free to return home in July.

On April14, after a very busy day, President Lincoln and his wife went to the theatre. When they entered the theatre, the people rose in their seats and cheered. Antarctica(南极洲) is a clean landscape that has never been developed or polluted, a place full of mysteries and information. In order to unlock the secrets of this vast expanse of ice, since Captain James Cook of Britain first undertook his Antarctic expedition in the 1870s, the region has attracted a huge number of explorers and scientists, who brave the terrible climate to carry out exploration and scientific research. Since the early 20th century, 28 countries have set up 72 scientific research stations on the frozen continent.
The year 2009 marks the 25 anniversary of the establishment(建立) of China’s Antarctic scientific research station and China’s Antarctic scientific exploration. Since the beginning of Antarctic research in the 1980s, China has built Changcheng Station, Zhongshan Station and Kunlun Station. China has gained much valuable data(数据) from its scientific research and polar mapping, solving many mysteries in the process.
The biggest achievement of the 25th Antarctic expedition is that the expedition team set up Kunlun Station, which is China’s first island station at Dome A, the very highest location on the Antarctic plateau. The establishment of Kunlun Station is a result of years’ efforts by the expedition team, enabling China to be among the top polar research countries. China has become the seventh country that has built an island station in Antarctica, following the United States, Russia, Japan, France, Italy and Germany.
With the establishment of Kunlun Station, China plans to gradually conduct scientific research in glaciology(冰河学), astronomy, atmospheric science and space physics. The plan covers astronomic observation, remote sensing, satellite data reception, human medical research and medical security research, as well as the drilling of the ice core of glaciers and mountain ranges under ice.
