Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said. In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper .They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk , they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears." In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can . A. write more notes B. digest concepts better C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better While taking notes, laptop users tend to be . A. skillful B. mindless C. thoughtful D. tireless The author of the passage aims to . A. examine the importance of long-term memory B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C. explain the process of taking notes D. promote the use of laptops The passage is likely to appear in . A. a newspaper advertisement B. a computer textbook C. a science magazine D. a finance report B Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can’t you be bothered to do? A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy that they’d catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs. Just over 2 000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health,Britain’s largest health charity. The results were astonishing. About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up. More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus.Worryingly,of the 654 respondents with children,64% said they were often too tired to play with them. This led the report to conclude that it’s no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese (very fat) before they start school. Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said,“People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too.” “If we don’t start to take control of this problem,a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks.” And Scotland’s largest city,Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK,with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%. The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year. What causes children in the UK to be obese? A.Eating ready meal. B.Watching TV. C.Doing Internet shopping. D.Being lazy. What can be inferred from the passage? A.British people are too lazy to do anything. B.Internet shopping will do harm to your health. C.Many people would not run to catch a bus in Britain. D.People should be more active and take regular exercise to keep fit. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage? A.One sixth of British people use remote control when watching TV. B.People will benefit not only themselves but their families by getting fit. C.Fatness can cause diseases such as heart disease and cancer. D.More people get obesity-related illnesses now than 40 years ago. C There is an old saying: No one thinks he’s a bad driver. Here’s an updated 21st century version: No one thinks he sends annoying e-mails.But plenty of us do. A Princeton University research found that 22 per cent of Americans say e-mail has added to their work pressures and caused misunderstandings. Here’s a guide on e-mail etiquette(礼节)to help you avoid being annoying. Experts say there are three types of e-mails with different rules—close friends, office and public e-mails. The close friends e-mail You can send your lover, your closest friends and your siblings(brothers and sisters) anything, from jokes to “you got to see this!”.But bear in mind that not everyone shares your sense of humour and you may expose them to viruses. The office e-mail Don’t add to people’s workload.Keep e-mails short and to the point. ◆Make the subject line factual and brief. ◆Write in clear, concise(简练的)sentences. ◆Provide your name and phone number at the end. The public e-mail Occasionally we have to send an email to a group of people. If possible, write your public e-mails with a who, what, when, where structure. For example: Who: All members of the soccer team What: Team photo When: Saturday, March 25, at noon Where: Playing field 2. Finally, before you hit “Send”, check the following: ◆Is the e-mail a “flame”? Never send an e-mail in anger. It could stay around forever and haunt(萦绕心头)your professional and personal life. ◆Check the “To” field. Is this really who you want to send the message to? ◆Spellcheck the message.Does it have an error that can affect you badly? The writer uses the old saying at the beginning of the passage to show that_______. A.many people are good at driving B.not everyone can be a good driver C.many people can be good.at sending non annoying e-mails D.many people think highly of themselves The writer may want to tell the reader that_______ A.mails online are often sent to wrong places B.different e-mails should be written in deliberate(仔细考虑的) ways C.sending office e-mails is sure to add to people’s workload D.the public e-mail is usually sent to a large number of people According to the writer, _______. A.angry B.excited C.worried D.disappointed D At first, Rhonda Tormaschy thought her 16-year-old daughter, Cassidy, was joking about opening up an ice cream truck. “We were sitting around one night with her and one of her friends and this is what she approached us with and we kind of thought she wasn’t serious at first,” Rhonda said. But last fall her husband, Chad, started looking for some type of truck, and they found an old school bus in Lincoln, Oregon. The family spent the winter fixing the bus, painting it and transforming it into Ice Cream Express. In order to turn the small, old school bus into an ice cream truck, the family put in a freezer, fridge and sink. “Getting it together was kind of an experience for all of us,” Rhonda said. “We had to go through the health inspector, we had to get signatures from the police department and the fire department.” “The community needed something to lighten up their day and make their day better,” Cassidy said. “I thought that this would be a good way to help everybody through their day.” She visits local businesses at a set time every Thursday and plans to hit up neighborhoods and parks in the evening, as well as serving ice cream at other summer events. Ice Cream Express serves Schwan’s products. “It’s quite a variety,” Cassidy said. “We have everything from the sundae cones to the sandwiches and Italian ice-just about anything.” Now that the truck is up and running, Cassidy hopes her younger sisters will take it over when she leaves for college. “We have a daughter that’s going to be 13 here and that would be a perfect time for her to take it over in the next couple of years-if she wants to,” Rhonda said. “If she doesn’t want to , I think I would probably continue it if it’s still a want and a need in Dickinson.” So far, the reception to Ice Cream Express has been amazing, Rhonda said. “We haven’t had an ice cream bus in this town for years,” Rhonda said. “I think it’s gone over way better than we anticipated it to, which is great.” What did Cassidy’s family have to do to get the ice cream truck prepared? a. Change the engine. b. Paint advertisements on it. c. Put in necessary appliances. d. Get approved by the authorities. A. c d B. b d C. b c D. a b Why did Cassidy decide to serve ice cream? A.
