He got away. He is used to this sort of thing. It’s said that the driver was Michael Francis Wiley, 40, who has overcome three operations, taught himself to drive with the left side of his body and has become one of Pasco County’s most known traffic violators (违规者). His license has been stopped so many times that driving itself has become illegal for him. Tuesday, at about 12:50 pm, a New Port Richey Police officer saw Wiley in a suspicious car — a blue Ford Explorer — at a convenience store off Road 19, according to Capt. Darryl Garman. When the officer went to investigate (调查), the Explorer took off. The chase, eventually joined by a second officer, led down the highway to Sunset Road, back to Road 19, back to Sunset, and finally over the bridge into Port Richey. But the Explorer was seen a minute later on Grand Boulevard, Garman said. From there it went to River Gulf Road, then south on Washington Street to Massachusetts Avenue. At about 1 pm, the officers broke off the chase because it could have put others in danger, Garman said. The Explorer was last seen heading south on Grand. Police decided to arrest Wiley today; charges could include fleeing an investigation and habitually driving with a revoked (吊销的) license. If it really was Wiley behind the wheel Tuesday and it is hard to imagine him being confused with another drive, this was not his most spectacular car chase. In 1998, while driving a green Corvette, he led police down Road 75 at nearly 120 mph. According to court records, Wiley stole a car, kicked a state guard and attacked his wife in the past. He is waiting for trial on separate drug and illegal-driving charges. He faces up to five years in prison. 56. From the first paragraph we can infer that ______. A. Wiley was released from prison not long ago B. Wiley is a disabled driver with perfect driving skills C. the police caught up with Wiley finally D. handicapped people are forbidden to drive a car 57. Which route did Wiley take during the chase? a. Port Richey b. Road 19 c. Sunset Road d. River Gulf Road e. Grand Boulevard A. c, b, c, a, e, d B. c, a, c, b, d, e C. c, b, a, c, e, d D. b, c, d, a, c, e 58. The police stopped chasing Wiley because they ____. A. discovered they had mistaken another driver for Wiley B. could not drive as fast as he could C. got stuck in a heavy traffic jam in the rush hour D. were afraid of causing accidents if they continued chasing him 59. The highest speed in the most spectacular car chase of Wiley was nearly ________ faster than the highest speed on Tuesday. A. 20 mph B. 15 mph C. 45 mph D. 35 mph B In 1985 Barbara Morgan was selected as the backup to teacher-astronaut Christa, who later died with six others in the Challenger explosion. Morgan remembers how she felt being selected. “We were all really excited to be doing what we were doing,” she said, “and Christa was, is and always will be our teacher in space, and our first teacher to fly.” After the accident, plans for a teacher in space were stopped. Morgan went on with her life, raising two sons, and teaching young people. But she never forgot her dream to fly in space and was always getting ready for it. In 1998 she rejoined NASA (国家航空和航天局) as a member of the group of the Endeavour. She was to fly on a 2004 shuttle mission, which was later known as the shuttle program reorganized following the Columbia accident in 2003. Now Astronaut Morgan is trying again as part of a seven person shuttle Endeavour crew (全体人员) making NASA’s 22nd flight to the international space station. US Navy commander (指挥官) Scott Kelly is commanding the seven person crew that has been training for months. Charles Hobaugh is the Endeavor’s pilot. Astronauts Rich Mastracchio and Dr Dave Williams of the Canadian space agency are returning to space for their second missions. First timers in space, NASA astronauts Alvin Drew, Tracy Galdwell and Barbara Morgan round out the crew as mission experts. Astronauts work on the International Space Station. “The risks are the same for an educator, or a physician or an engineer or a pilot or a chemist, or anyone else who flies in space,” explains Morgan. “We’re doing it to learn, explore, discover and help make this world a better place, and we’re doing it to help keep those doors open for our young people.” Like all shuttle missions, Endeavour is about the future, bringing the International Space Station a step closer to completion and gathering experience that will help humankind return to the moon someday, eventually go to Mars, and, perhaps, beyond. 60. From what Morgan said in Paragraph 1, we can infer that ______. A. Morgan was not sad about the death of Christa B. Christa was the first teacher to fly in space C. Morgan wanted to take Christa’s place on the Challenger D. Christa was Morgan’s teacher before she became her backup 61. Morgan rejoined NASA most probably because ______. A. she was in need of money to raise her children B. she was tired of teaching young people at school C. she wanted to realize her dream to be an astronaut D. she was again selected as a member 62. According to Paragraph 4, who have already had experiences in space? A. Scott Kelly and Morgan. B. Rich Mastracchio and Dave Williams. C. Alvin Drew and Tracy Galdwell. D. Christa and Morgan. 63. From the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5, we can learn that Morgan ______. A. regretted having rejoined NASA B. encourages the other members to train hard C. thinks anyone who flies in space has to face risks D. thinks it’s too dangerous to work as an astronaut C Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for expensive things, like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works. Allowances give children a chance to experience three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or give it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it. Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: They have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children learn about personal finance. A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest (复利). Compounding works by paying interest on interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will earn two cents in the first year. The second year, the money will earn two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up. 64. By receiving an allowance, children can ______. A. learn how to spend money from experience B. learn to avoid making any financial mistakes C. spend money as much as they want D. learn how to make money as early as they can 65. When giving children an allowance, parents should NOT _______. A. know clearly what they spend it on B. advise them to make a budget C. offer them more money as soon as they spend it D. pay them to do extra work around the house 66. Which of the following is the main advantage of giving children an allowance? A. They have to cut their costs. B. They can learn to plan for the future. C. They can earn a living at an early age. D. They can learn some financial knowledge. 67. According to the passage, if you invest 100 dollars at 2% compound- 配套讲稿:
