As with any atrisk animals,we have to study them if we are to save them.We need to find out where they are in the forest, what they eat and how they give birth to theirbabies. But because of their shy nature and the fact that they live in wild areas, this has not been easy to do.We have found that the most successful way to study the okapi is to dig pits (刨坑) in the forest to catch them. Then we attach radio ropes to their necks and set them free. The radios allow us to follow their activities—to know what they are doing and when they are doing it.Over the years we have built up quite a detailed picture of the way they spend their time. When a baby is born, the female okapi hides the newborn from animals which would kill it.She spends a lot of the day searching for food in the forest, returning two or three times a day to look after her baby. The ecosystem of the Ituri forest is very important to the okapi. For example, two nature reserves in nearby Rwanda were cleared and made into farmland and, because the areas shared the same ecosystem as the Ituri forest, the forest itself has been affected seriously. The speed at which the lovely okapi are disappearing is a big worry. We are working with the Congolese government and got their agreement to take action against illegal hunting and to protect the National Parks, which are important for the animals. 21.The underlined word “invisible” in Paragraph 1 means “________”. A.obvious B.endangered C.can’t be seen D.hard to catch 22.Paragraph 2 is mainly about________. A.why the author stays in the forest B.how the author studies the okapi C.how the okapi spend their time D.why the okapi are at risk 23.After a baby okapi is born,________. A.it will live independently B.the father will take care of it C.the mother will put it in a safe place D.the mother will stay with it all the time 24.The example of the two nature reserves is given to show________. A.farmland should make way for forests B.the okapi depend greatly on the Ituri forest C.our environment has been seriously damaged D.the okapi play a key role in the forest’s ecosystem B A number of fortunate students at 21 elementary schools in the Southeast city of Daegu,South Korea are testing out a new kind of educator—A robot teacher. Designed to teach English, the eggshaped robots have been preprogrammed to read books, sing songs and play games.Just like human teachers, they can also move around the class on their wheels, and even dance to music by moving their arms and heads. While they appear to be completely autonomous (自动的),the robots are controlled by human educators from the Philippines, who can hear and see the children’s reactions by a remote (远程的) controlled machine. The children can also observe the teacher’s expressions, which can be seen on the screen which is on the top of the robot’s neck. The program has been offered by the government to test if children respond better to robots than humans. Also, the cost of employing English teachers remotely is far lower than bringing them into the country. They also believe that if the robots prove to be effective (有效的),they can be sent to remote areas, where the teachers don’t want to go.An added benefit is that robots don’t get sick, ask for vacations or away for a better pay!A little maintenance (维修) and oil every now and again and, they are good to go.However, the officers say that these robots will be helping human teachers, not replacing them, anytime in the near future. While the test is going really well, there are still some problems that need to be solved before the robots show up all across South Korea. They still require a lot of work and each costs about $8,000.If these problems can be attacked, robot teachers will become a common sight across all schools in South Korea and maybe, other parts of the world too! 25.The main purpose of designing the robot teachers is to________. A.replace human teachers B.make learning more interesting C.improve English teaching quickly D.help human teachers teach English 26.The author shows the advantages of robot teachers by________. A.providing examples B.making comparisons C.telling interesting stories D.following the order of importance 27.We can infer from the text that the robot teachers________. A.are more popular than human teachers B.have been used in remote areas C.perform well at the moment D.will soon be used widely 28.In which part of a newspaper can we read the text? A.Travel. B.Nature. C.Technology. D.Business. C York teen Timothy Doner has an unusual hobby—He likes to learn languages! And not the way most of us do to pass school exams, but well enough so that he can have a fluent conversation.Over the last five years, the 17yearold has been able to master 23!While this has earned him the name of the world’s youngest polyglot (通晓多种语言的人),he is still not satisfied. Timothy’s interest in learning languages began in 2009 after he finished basic Hebrew lessons in preparation for his Bar Mitzvah ceremony (犹太男子的成年礼).He enjoyed it so much that he decided to become fluent in Modern Hebrew. Then he picked up Arabic.Within four days,he managed to master the alphabet (字母表) and by the end of the week,he could read the language fluently. Over the years,he has added Russian,Farsi,Hausa,Italian,Persian,Swahili Indonesian,Hindi,Ojibwa,Pashto,Turkish,Kurdish,Yiddish,Dutch,Croatian,Spanish and German to his list of languages. The list does not include the ones that he has taken up at school, which include French,Mandarin,Latin and of course,English. The most amazing part is that he has managed to learn all the additional languages on his own, using just online programs and grammar books. The young polyglot begins by learning how to pronounce the alphabet correctly and then teaching himself the correct grammar. He then enlarges this by reading newspapers and talking with people that speak that language, either in person or on Internet chat rooms. In order to attract other people with similar skills and interest,he has even started making videos of himself speaking different languages on YouTube.Among the polyglots is 31yearold Ohio man Moses McMormick, who has mastered 50 languages! Timothy, whose next goal is to learn Sudanese and Malay, says that his language skills are very useful when he is on the subway, walking around New York City or even at a restaurant, because they allow him to listen to all kinds of fun and interesting conversations. 29.What do we know about Timothy? A.He has a gift for languages. B.He began to learn languages at five. C.He is a teen who has many hobbies. D.He prefers selfstudy to school education. 30.Timothy developed an interest in learning languages________. A.after he picked up Arabic B.after his Bar Mitzvah ceremony C.after he mastered French and Latin D.after his talk with Moses McMormick 31.We can infer from Paragraph 4 that Timothy________. A.likes to show off his language skills B.prefers to practice languages online C.aims to master about 50 languages D.shares the same interest as Moses 32.According to the last paragraph,Timothy’s language skills help him________. A.make a lot of foreign friends B.enjoy more fun in everyday life C.become popular in public places D.join in others’ conversations easily D Save The Elephants,an international organization aimed at saving elephants, has started a campaign to persuade some farmers in Taita Taveta county,Kenya,to practice bee keeping as a way of preventing elephants from destroying their crops. Dr Lucy King, the STE officer for Kenya, said the project is aimed at farmers in elephantsuffering areas of MtitoAndei,Voi,Mwatate and Taveta. King said:“Use of beehives (蜂窝) is a safe and affordable solution to the frequent humanelephant conflict (冲突).” “Elephants are known to be afraid of bees. That means farms with beehives will be safe and the owners are able to get a harvest in addition to getting more money from the sale of honey,” she said.Honeycare Africa, the largest producer of high quality honey in East Africa, will provide the hives and will be buying the honey at a reasonable price from the farmers. One acre of land requires twentyfive beehives. King said that the project had been tested in Laikipia and Samburu counties with great success. She added that the project would be able to reach thousands of longsuffering farmers from all over the county. According to Dr King who is an expert in animal behavior, use of beehives will not harm seasonal movements of animals. She expressed her disquietude with an electric fence. She thought that an electric fence kept all animals in the limited areas, not letting even the harmless ones move freely. “Unlike electric fences, hives will stop the elephants from going into people’s farms but will not stop them from moving around. All other animals are also free to move around,” she said. Dan Mghenyi,a farmer from Voi admitted that all other efforts to keep the elephants away from farms had been unsuccessful. “We have tried almost everything but the elephants keep coming.Hives are easy to set up and are affordable to most farmers. This is something that actually works,” he said. Farmers in the county have in the past lost crops worth millions of shillings and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has taken a lot of criticism (批评) over the failure to control movements of the wild animals. 33.What is the text mainly about? A.An elephantsaving organization. B.The conflict between farmers and elephants. C.A project to help African farmers make money. D.A way of using bees to keep elephants away from farms. 34.According to the text,Honeycare Africa________. A.is the largest honey company in Africa B.provides a market for farmers’ honey C.will teach farmers how to keep bees D.will offer free hives to farmers 35.What does the underlined word “disquietude” probably mean?
