Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps? Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that. Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (哲理) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine (决定) your destination. Go straight, and jump over all the obstacles as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life to reach the destination successfully. Growing up, I always hated the holiday Halloween. Why? Long story short, I was easily scared. Out of all the years of this, probably the most memorable was the Halloween of 2006.
My day started out normal, or at least as normal as it can get on Halloween morning. I was in third grade, and I was walking toward my classroom. Since it was Halloween, we were all dressed up in costumes. I was a fairy princess.
As I walked into my classroom, all the lights were off. When the clock struck 8, the door slammed shut and we heard a horrible voice. “Hello, my children!” said the voice. It came from a woman in black robes and a pointy hat. It took me a few minutes to realize that this was actually my teacher, Mrs. Roberson. Thankfully, after a long speech about how she was not Mrs. Roberson, she turned the lights back on and let us work on crossword puzzles.
Sadly, this didn’t last long. After about an hour, Mrs Roberson led us through a dark hallway. Cobwebs (蜘蛛网) were everywhere, glowing eyes stared at me from behind doors, and I thought I heard the howling of a werewolf (狼人).
I was scared. Don’t worry, I told myself. You’ll be okay. After all, what’s the worst that could happen during school? She took us to an empty classroom, and then blindfolded (罩住眼睛) all of us after we sat down on the ground. “Now, I will be passing around various body parts,” she said. “Do not peek at the organs, or we will eat you. First is the heart ...” I held my breath. Of course it wasn’t really a body part, but what was it? The “heart” was slimy (黏糊糊的) and cold! And ... it was moving! I was terrified. Then came the...I wondered what they could be. Finally, as the eyeballs and the stomach, “intestines (肠子)” came around, I peeked. It was only cold spaghetti noodles!
After that, we went back to our own classrooms. “Betty,” I heard a voice say, “May I have a word?” Frozen in fear, I walked toward my teacher. What would she do? She must have seen me peek! “I just wanted to congratulate you on your perfect test score!” I sighed in relief (宽慰) for one of many times that day. I was safe, at least for today.

Being frightened can be good for you. Fear makes your brain flood with healthy chemicals that excite your mood and produce feelings of euphoria, or great excitement. According to Dr. Margee Kerr, a sociologist who studies fear, this “powerful chemical punch” includes endorphins and dopamine―a natural compound (化合物) in the body that creates feelings of happiness.
When you’re scared, your body also produces a chemical called oxytocin. This hormone (荷尔蒙) helps people bond with one another. When people share the experience of being scared, it can make them feel closer. So, if you’re at a haunted (闹鬼的) house with some friends, that experience can help strengthen your friendship. “Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr says.
There is also some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful (有压力的) situations. Things like giving a presentation in front of your class or performing in a school play can make us fearful and anxious. But these experiences help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident. “You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work though it during stressful situations,” Kerr explains.
Though some haunting may be healthy, it’s importa
